LAS VEGAS – Diego Pacheco towered over Steven Nelson as they stood face to face Friday afternoon.
Less than two pounds separated them when they stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale moments earlier at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. A poised Pacheco promised once they were separated to demonstrate that the six-inch, 11⁄2-pound differential between them is much greater than that Saturday night in their 12-round, 168-pound main event at the nearby Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan.
Nelson used his index finger to touch the area around Pacheco’s heart Friday, until Pacheco partially turned away from him and started flexing his muscles for photographers. An agitated Nelson attempted to push the issue with Pacheco, but Brian McIntyre, Nelson’s trainer, pulled his fighter away from his imposing opponent.
An unfazed Pacheco praised the undefeated Nelson, who has trained alongside pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford, one of Nelson’s closest friends, for many years. The Los Angeles-based Mexican-American contender also made it clear that the Omaha native has never encountered what awaits him in a main event DAZN will stream worldwide.
“I’m just ready to go, man,” Pacheco, who officially weighed 166.4 pounds, told Matchroom Boxing’s Justin Shackil following the weigh-in. “I’m just excited for this fight. … If he don’t know, he about to find out.”
The 23-year-old Pacheco (22-0, 18 KOs) is The Ring’s third-ranked super middleweight contender for champion Canelo Alvarez’s title. The 36-year-old Nelson (20-0, 16 KOs) is not ranked by The Ring, but he promised that will change when he pulls off what would be a huge upset Saturday night.
“There ain’t nothing I ain’t seen,” said Nelson, who weighed in at the contracted maximum of 168 pounds. “There ain’t no stone unturned. I did everything I needed to do in camp.”
