De La Hoya Says Schofield’s Relationship With His Father/Trainer Is ‘Very Strange,’ Still Seeks Clarity On What Led To Removal From Stevenson Fight
NEW YORK – Oscar De La Hoya wishes he had better answers about the bizarre behavior that led to Floyd Schofield Jr.’s removal from the biggest fight of his career last month.

“The Golden Boy” is still awaiting results from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association tests that were taken on Schofield in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he was hospitalized four days before he was supposed to fight for Shakur Stevenson’s WBC lightweight title February 22 at ANB Bank Arena. Schofield’s promoter told The Ring that he’ll have a better idea of how to move forward with Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) and his father/trainer, Floyd Sr., once those results are obtained.

Schofield Sr. claimed his son was “poisoned” by Stevenson and/or his team in Riyadh.

Stevenson laughed off that allegation five weeks after the Schofields ridiculously claimed Stevenson broke into Schofield Jr.’s apartment and stole the signature page from his passport. That was their excuse for not attending a press conference January 13 in London to promote “The Last Crescendo” pay-per-view card that included Stevenson-Schofield.

De La Hoya apologized to Stevenson in person. He appreciates Stevenson’s professionalism, but the retired six-division world champion more than realizes this is no laughing matter.

“I’ve been communicating with them,” De La Hoya told The Ring regarding the Schofields. “It’s a very strange relationship with the father and the son, between them. … We communicate through text and, yeah, the father is different. The father is quite unique. I’m trying to get all the information. We’re getting the doctor reports, the hospital reports, any day now, from VADA, I believe. He had to take tests when he was in the hospital. I wanna get all the facts. I wanna get all the information before I speak about it. I think it’s very delicate because these types of allegations, you don’t mess around with.”

Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) stopped Schofield’s late replacement, England’s Josh Padley (15-1, 4 KOs), in the 9th round on the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitriy Bivol undercard.

Schofield Jr., 22, was adamant about never having withdrawn from the fight. The British Boxing Board of Control, which regulated the nine-fight card for Riyadh Season, would not license Schofield to box because of the potential liability involved if it permitted the Austin, Texas native to compete four days after he was hospitalized.

Other than the unfounded claims of poisoning, it is unclear why Schofield ended up in an emergency room. He posted photos on social media late in the previous week that indicated he was already under 140 pounds, less than five above the contracted limit for the Stevenson bout.

“That’s the issue – we don’t know what happened,” De La Hoya said. “Once we have the facts, I can address it. But, you know, it wasn’t a good look, obviously. But will he be back? Absolutely, he’ll be back. Is he a great fighter? Absolutely. He’s an incredible talent. And he’s only getting better, so I wanna dig deep down and just figure out what exactly happened, so I can make my assessment.”

There have been discussions, despite this odd occurrence in Riyadh, about scheduling Schofield on another Riyadh Season card sometime in the summer. De La Hoya still considers Schofield a future “star in boxing.”

“Look, we have our plans,” De La Hoya said. “We’re still running a promotional company. And I have my plans for ‘Kid Austin.’ I haven’t faced him against a world champion or put him in against a top five contender. So, it’s like I have my plan and my system, and how I work. So, yeah, we just have to wait to see what’s gonna happen with hospital reports. And then we take it from there.”
