Jake Paul and MVP Promotions have hitched their wagon to Hall of Fame fighter and promoter Oscar De La Hoya to further their shot at a world title run.
Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) is set to take on
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-6-1, 34 KOs) in a 10-round cruiserweight clash June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on DAZN PPV.
In the co-main event, WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion
Gliberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs) will make the first unified title defence against his WBA mandatory challenger
Yuniel Dorticos (27-2, 25 KOs).
As Ramirez continues to call out Paul for a fight, it’s safe to assume the wheels are in motion for a future fight between them if both emerge victorious. The other 200-pound champions are Ring/IBF titlist
Jai Opetaia (27-0, 21 KOs) and WBC titleholder
Badou Jack (29-3-3, 18 KOs).
“I wish I could say that we were talking about Ramirez being next for Jake after Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but no, no talks whatsoever,” De La Hoya said on DAZN. “I think Jake Paul is focused on Chavez because it’s a tough fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chavez is ahead on the betting odds. I believe, in my eyes, and the world’s eyes, that this is the first real test and real fighter [Paul is facing].”
DraftKings has Paul listed as a minus-650 favorite and Chavez as a plus-450 underdog. Paul is coming off a November unanimous decision win against 58-year-old Mike Tyson, which he reportedly made $40million for, whereas Chavez beat former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in a six-round unanimous decision four months earlier.
“I commend Jake Paul for what he’s done from the start and how serious he’s taken boxing,” said De La Hoya. “This guy is probably the hardest worker in the game today. He has to prove himself from the back of the bunch and work himself up, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Now he’s fighting Chavez, who’s a real fighter. He’s been a world champion. Canelo Alvarez couldn’t knock him out.
"So imagine. I’m banking on if Jake Paul knocks out Chavez, I mean, what are we doing? It’s a huge step toward that world title that he wants, and it’s not far-fetched. I feel that Jake Paul is the real deal, and I’m not just saying that because we are working with him and that we teamed up – no.”
While Paul and De La Hoya have joined forces to co-promote the event, don’t expect the 52-year-old De La Hoya to be the latest aging legend to face the YouTuber turned fighter.
“No, not enough money,” said De La Hoya.
