Oscar De La Hoya predicted that
Canelo Alvarez would lose to
Terence Crawford if their fight reached a decision.
Alvarez’s former promoter rarely misses an opportunity to criticize him. De La Hoya seemed particularly happy to gloat about Crawford’s win when he discussed their fight Thursday on Instagram.
“God, it makes me [happy] to tell you I told you so,” De La Hoya said. “I predicted the Canelo-Crawford fight like a goddamn fortune teller. Canelo’s feet were cemented on the canvas as he was hitting air. The [expletive] was that? Props to Crawford. He came up [two] weight classes and fought a beautiful fight. What a great performance – like taking candy from a baby. He played with Canelo, made him look silly.
“And before you start your [expletive] with Canelo being old, just know Crawford is older. That’s not an excuse here. Look, I promoted Canelo’s entire career. It was a huge fluff. The only real fighters he’s faced were [Floyd] Mayweather, [Dmitry] Bivol, and Crawford, and they all toyed with him. Even Mayweather knew Crawford was going to school him and put $50,000 for Crawford to win.”
De La Hoya, a Hall of Fame fighter, and Alvarez have been estranged for more than five years. De La Hoya was largely responsible for building Alvarez, 35, into the global icon he is today from 2010 to 2020 by staging many memorable fights, but they no longer see eye to eye.
Alvarez sued De La Hoya in 2020 and got out of his contract with Golden Boy and DAZN. He has masterfully maneuvered his career ever since, working with Eddie Hearn, Al Haymon and now Turki Alalshikh as part of a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season to fight across different networks and streaming services.
Alvarez has two more fights left on the four-fight contract he signed with Riyadh Season early in February.
