Ryan Garcia is most interested in getting a rematch against
Rolando Romero for his ring return, and he has instructed his handlers to finalize the deal.
As Garcia and Oscar De La Hoya navigate another chapter in their years-long rift, the promoter said that his preference is to move on from Romero and focus on new challengers. Garcia told
The Ring this week that
De La Hoya has no loyalty, respect, trust or belief in him. “No, I actually don’t [like the Romero rematch] because the first fight was a dull fight," De La Hoya said during the DAZN broadcast of Oscar Duarte's majority decision win against Kenneth Sims on Saturday.
"When you’re a promoter, and you’re trying to make rematches, it’s because the people want to see it. The first fight wasn’t that entertaining. The first fight wasn’t a big deal, so I believe that there are other opponents out there for Ryan. There are other big names and big fights we can make with the likes of Teofimo [Lopez], and other fighters out there. But first things first, I need Ryan to be in great health."
Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC), who soon will turn 27, is recovering from right-hand surgery — his second in four years — and has recently started light training.
In addition to Romero, who was just named WBA champion, Garcia is also interested in fights against Manny Pacquiao and Lopez.
“I want him to be cleared of his hand. He does have an injury, and I want the doctors to clear him 100 percent,” said De La Hoya. “Ryan at 100 percent is very dangerous for anybody. We are looking forward to his comeback, and I can't wait to put something together."
