Dave Coldwell on what makes Andy Lee special: 'Brings personality out of his guys'
The sight of Andy Lee alongside Ben Whittaker, embracing his flaws while shielding him from harm's way, exemplifies why many feel he's the right man to steer the light heavyweight contender forward.

Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs), an Olympic silver medallist, scored a second-round stoppage win over Liam Cameron (23-7-1, 10 KOs) in their much-anticipated rematch earlier this month, six months after a Riyadh showcase proved disastrous and cut short ambitious plans to fully capitalise on a year where his stock and profile rose exponentially.

Whittaker's promoter and BOXXER chief Ben Shalom has already pinpointed a September return for the 27-year-old, with former European champion Dan Azeez (21-2-1, 13 KOs) and current British titleholder Lewis Edmondson (11-0, 3 KOs) among the options they're said to be pursuing.

An emotional press conference dominated the post-fight fallout, Whittaker detailing a renewed faith in God and spending time at his local church before a text from Andy Lee restored faith during a time when many close to him were complicit in their criticism.

"He came to me and said, 'Come to Ireland and I truly believe you can get the old Ben Whittaker back.' I went out there, we spoke honestly to each other, trained hard," he shared before thanking his sparring partners out in the Irish capital, joking he's now an honorary traveller after being welcomed to Dublin with open arms.

Dave Coldwell, who notably trained now-retired former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew among others, revealed his excitement about what the future holds for both.

When asked how he sees the Whittaker-Lee pairing working, the Rotherham-based coach couldn't be higher in praising the collaborative decision.

"It's fantastic. Ben has the best man he could possibly have for the whole development of boxing in the ring, character and personality outside it," Coldwell told the Ring.

"Andy is one of the sport's best humans, got a lot of knowledge given what he's done, the people he's been around and with Ben's flamboyance and skills, that's going to blend together to make a really exciting stage of his career going forward."

He's not the only one. After a split draw in his world middleweight title fight against WBC titleholder Carlos Adames in February, Hamzah Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) cited watching a training session between Lee and new pupil Whittaker as confirmation he'd made the right decision by also making the switch to Dublin and the Ballybrack Boxing Club.

On DAZN's broadcast of Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn 10 days ago, the 25-year-old, who will make his super-middleweight debut against Edgar Berlanga on July 12, expressed his belief this will be the last coaching change he makes the rest of his career after splitting from longtime trainer Ricky Funez.

"Same thing with Hamzah too, he's a very good prospect and a really good kid. Sheeraz, Whittaker, Joseph Parker and Paddy Donovan, Andy's got a really good stable and they'll all vibe off one another," Coldwell continued.

WBO interim heavyweight champion Parker (36-3, 24 KOs) has been rejuvenated under his tutelage, and others are queuing up to absorb the former WBO middleweight titlist's knowledge.

So, what does Lee have that makes him special?

"He's got a very calm demeanour, won't just tell you what to do... he'll explain and teach. I prefer coaches to be like that - rather than programming robots - he gets his guys to think and understand.

"The personal communication helps, because he's such a cool person, you can get more out of your fighters personality-wise, when knowing how they tick. Once they become comfortable and don't put fake bravado on, they'll say if they feel nervous or edgy, so you work around that, comfort them and they'll perform better for it."
