Dave Allen has opened the door to an extraordinary fight with former world heavyweight champion
Deontay Wilder.
The Doncaster De La Hoya breathed new life into his career over the course of two fights with Johnny Fisher,
the second of which ended in a knockout victory at the Copper Box at the weekend.
As a result of his victory, the 33-year-old father-of-two Allen (24-7-2, 19 KOs) has now signed promotional terms with Matchroom, five years on from his last fight with them.
He is expected to return to Yorkshire for a headline show in September in the first of his two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn, and has already called for a fight with Chris Lovejoy (20-1-1, 20 KOs).
But after that, Allen revealed he has enquired with his promoter about a potential clash with Wilder,
who is set to return to the ring next month when he faces Tyrell Anthony Herndon in Wichita.
It will be Wilder’s first outing since he was beaten by Zhilei Zhang at the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh on June 1, 2024 on the Queensberry-Matchroom 5v5 card. That result means the Bronze Bomber is on a run of four defeats in his last five outings, stretching back to his 2020 stoppage loss to Tyson Fury in their 2020 rematch.
Former WBC king Wilder, however, has insisted he is back to his old self again and will launch the next phase of his career on June 27 against Herndon. And Allen hopes that will involve a fight with him, too.
“I text Eddie Hearn and said ‘why don’t we get a few wins and then box Wilder?’,” Allen said on Instagram.
“Eddie replied saying ‘could happen, yeah’. Genuinely, for some reason, bizarrely in 2025, Dave Allen could box Deontay Wilder.
“So he’s not the fighter he was but it’s still crazy that it could even be an option but they are the sort of fights that would really get the best out of me. It’s dreamland really, but it’s definitely a fight I would love.”
Allen was unlucky not to get the decision in his first fight with Fisher but made an emphatic statement in their rematch, closing the show at the end of the fifth round in chilling fashion.
It was enough, he revealed, to secure his new contract with Matchroom.
He said: “When the contract came through for the Fisher rematch, if I beat Fisher, I had to sign a two-fight with Matchroom but in all honesty that’s a great position to be in. The plan is to box in September and maybe defend the title I just won.”
