Dalton Smith Targets Winner of Alberto Puello vs. Sandor Martin
DALTON SMITH has targeted the winner of the March 1st clash between Alberto Puello and Sandor Martin in Brooklyn.

Smith claimed the vacant European super-lightweight title in stunning fashion in Nottingham Saturday night, dropping and stopping 19-2 Frenchman Walid Ouizza in a round.

It was a victory which also secured the WBC silver title for the Sheffield man, 27, who drew a line under 10 months out of the ring with the explosive win.

Smith has been linked with the likes of Adam Azim and Regis Prograis but he insists that he wants his next fight to be for the full world title.

At 17-0 with 13 KOs, Smith now sits at No.2 with the WBC and is hopeful the sanctioning body’s president Mauricio Sulaiman will order him to fight the winner of Puello and Martin.

Dominican Puello won the belt via split decision over Gary Antuanne Russell in June last year and makes his first defense against 42-3 Spaniard Martin, who is the WBC No.1 contender, at the Barclays Center in five weeks’ time.

Smith said: “You see how this belt is silver? I want to turn it gold. I’m hoping Mauricio is watching tonight. I hope I made him proud because in my next fight I want to turn this silver into gold.

“I’m ranked at No.2 at the minute with the WBC. I want to have a busy year so shout out to Mauricio, I want to be part of the WBC family with a world title.

“I’ll fight whoever but my main aim is to become the WBC world champion and that’s the winner of Alberto Puello and Sandor Martin. There are a lot of big fights out there for me but my main aim is to get that WBC world title.”

Smith is now on a three fight knockout hot streak and his victory over Ouizza is the first time he has ended a fight in the opening round. On the win, he added: “I prepared for 12 rounds, Walid Ouizza had never been stopped and had beat some good opposition. To do that after 10 months out, I’m only going to get better. It feels good to win the European title.

“It was a frustrating back end of the year and there was a lot of built up frustration. I’m now hungrier than ever.”
