Eighteen-year-old phenom Curmel Moton had a forgettable end to his 2024 campaign by badly missing weight, but he’ll get another shot at proving his potential on February 1.

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. promoted protege will be featured on the undercard of the light heavyweight fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. An opponent has not been named yet.

Moton (6-0, 5 KOs) was supposed to face Bryan Mercado on November 30 in a six-round bout in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Thanksgiving weekend fight was contracted at a 133-pound catchweight, but Moton weighed an ungodly 148.7 pounds.

Moton explained his side of the situation soon after the fight was canceled.

“I want to apologize to everyone that was planning on coming to Jersey to watch me fight,” said Moton. “I’ve been going back and forth with the commission about my bloodwork passing, and as of right now, they lost my blood in their system [which meant the fight was unlikely to be sanctioned].

“I’ve known this for the past three days, so there was no point in killing myself to make [the] weight. They still made me weigh in for some reason, and they decided that was the reason they were going to cancel the fight.”

In a separate statement days later, Moton said: “I want to apologize to the New Jersey Athletic Commission and my fans. The commission had nothing to do with what happened last week. God willing, I’ll be back in the ring soon.”

Moton, an 18-time national champion, was also supposed to be featured on the undercard of the Ryan Garcia-Rukiya Anpo exhibition on December 30 in Japan, but that event was postponed due to a Garcia injury.

Alas, Moton will return on the big stage for his 2025 debut in five weeks.
