Isaac Cruz: Unlike Gervonta Davis, Ready For Immediate Rematch with Lamont Roach
Isaac Cruz couldn’t resist.

While agreeing that the controversial result of his fan-friendly fight with Lamont Roach on Saturday warrants an immediate rematch, “Pitbull” also took a shot at an adversary who wouldn’t fight Cruz or Roach a second time.

“Do the fans want a rematch?” Cruz asked during their post-fight press conference early Sunday morning. “Do you guys want a rematch? I’m not Gervonta Davis. I’m ready for a rematch right away.”

Cruz and Roach gave Davis the two toughest fights of his career. The embattled WBA lightweight champion didn’t face either fighter again, even after exercising his contractual right to an immediate rematch with Roach following their infamous majority draw nine months ago at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) and Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs) also settled for a 12-round majority draw at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. Roach hopes Cruz, unlike Davis, honors the non-binding commitment he made in the aftermath of their pay-per-view main event.

“I think the best thing to do is move forward with an immediate rematch,” Roach said after his junior welterweight debut. “And I would say on somewhat of a level playing field.”

By “level playing field,” Roach presumably meant Cruz received much of the crowd support at a venue packed with Mexican boxing fans. Like Cruz, Roach is aligned with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, which ensured he received a high-profile opportunity once Davis reneged on their rematch agreement to face Jake Paul in an exhibition that was canceled after Davis’ ex-girlfriend accused him of domestic violence.

Cruz scored a knockdown, the first of Roach’s career, when Roach’s right glove touched the canvas to prevent him from going down during the third round. Referee James Green later deducted a point from Cruz for hitting Roach on the lower part of his back in the seventh round.

Judge Chris Tellez scored Cruz a 115-111 winner. Judges Cory Santos and Nathan Palmer had it even, 113-113 apiece.

Roach, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was the more effective fighter according to CompuBox’s unofficial statistics. CompuBox credited Roach for landing more power punches (142 of 291 to 132 of 382) and jabs (49 of 176 to 27 of 162), an overall advantage of 32 punches.

Mexico City’s Cruz complained that Green’s point deduction cost him what would’ve been a close but unanimous win on the cards. Cruz also commended Roach, who often stood and traded with Cruz in his first fight at a higher weight.

“Lamont is definitely a good fighter that has good qualities,” Cruz said through a translator. “And we’re the only ones that pushed Gervonta the way we did, up until the very end, and [that’s] the reason why Gervonta didn’t give either of us a rematch. We just showed why we’re both quality fighters. And I hope that the fans enjoyed the show because it was really, truly a showing of two really, really elite fighters that were at their best.”

Cruz, who retained his WBC interim super lightweight title, lost a unanimous decision to Baltimore’s Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) in December 2021. Davis won that bout on all three scorecards (116-112, 115-113, 115-113), but the powerful southpaw couldn’t hurt Cruz, who relentlessly pressured Davis to make their fight competitive at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
