Crocker-Donovan Undercard: Farrell Excels In Hughes Rematch, Turhan's Stunning Statement
There were a trio of decision victories on the undercard, although Elif Nur Turhan's first-round highlight reel knockout victory will long be remembered as Matchroom's Belfast bill preceding the IBF welterweight final title eliminator between unbeaten contenders Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan unfolded.

The Before the Bell portion streamed live on YouTube, while the subsequent four fights will be televised on DAZN worldwide.

Farrell finds his groove
In an all-Northern Irish contest at super-bantamweight, Ruadhan Farrell oozed class during a Gerard Hughes rematch and proved a worthy winner over eight rounds.

After being second best for much of the early going, Hughes (5-1-1) finished the fourth strong with flurries, going downstairs as Farrell (7-1-1, 2 KOs) was briefly pinned against the ropes, though that success didn't last.

The Ballycastle man had only boxed once since their December 2023 first meeting and ending a near year-long layoff here, the older man was noticeably tense as Farrell's punch selection deterred him.

He landed shots in bunches, typified by a sequence with his back to the ropes in the seventh, landing combinations after Hughes had just stung him with a body shot, always first and third in their exchanges.

Hughes didn't stop trying, though muddied his work and couldn't maintain ample distance between them to avoid Farrell making his face a crimson red colour, uppercuts and piercing jab work among the best shots as the 25-year-old spun him and was clearly enjoying himself, bobbing and weaving in the final frame.

Turhan topples Browne inside a minute
Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn had said in the build-up that Turkey's heavy-handed talent Elif Nur Turhan and her team wouldn't stop messaging him for years, pleading for one opportunity to show just how good she was on a big card.

The Istanbul resident seized it with style on ten days' notice, producing a startling first-round finish during a battle of unbeaten lightweight contenders, silencing Ireland's Shauna Browne (5-1, 4 KOs) in their WBC world title eliminator.

They engaged in centre ring, Browne absorbed a massive left hook and it was immediately apparent she was in dire straights before referee Hugh Russell Jnr rightly waved it off, the 30-year-old southpaw visibly in a bad way.

Turhan (10-0, 6 KOs) thanked the crowd for making her feel at home, said she trained "very hard" for Browne and hopes their short-lived contest shows women's boxing is also worth watching, according to her translator while Hearn declared her one of the most exciting fighters in the discipline, set to become mandatory challenger for BOXXER-backed WBC titleholder Caroline Dubois (10-0-1, 5 KOs).

O'Neill endures adversity
Belfast's own Jack O'Neill didn't have it all his own way, dealing with a big cut and scoring a flash knockdown a round later, though stayed steady en route to a 39-36 points win over a spirited Mohammed Wako (1-3) showing over four rounds.

Guilty of being one-paced at times behind his jab, the 24-year-old (4-0, 1 KO) suddenly had a crisis streaming down his face after an accidental head clash in centre ring gave Wako a target to continuously exploit.

A right-hand he didn't see coming dropped the Ethiopian a minute into round three, though it was a flash rather than a big knockdown, floored by a disguised punch behind the arm he didn't foresee.

He finished strong in the fourth against a home favourite who couldn't avoid the firefight, nor possess enough power to keep the York resident off him in an interesting four-round tussle.

Bowen kicks off 2025 with victory
Aaron Bowen flirted with a late finish and bossed proceedings over six rounds, improving to 5-0 in the paid ranks after an assured showing against Argentina's Juan Cruz Cacheiro.

Said to have brought 200 of his own Coventry faithful with him for another away day, the 26-year-old showed subtle signs of improvement having been dropped by James Todd on November 30 in an all-action contest last time out.

Bowen's body work quickly saw Cacheiro (7-4, 3 KOs) in retreat against the ropes early on and while the Buenos Aires visitor showed resistance with some flashes of success in rounds three and five, the Commonwealth bronze medallist replied by upping the tempo before varying his attacks.

Guilty of brawling a bit in the penultimate round, Cacheiro's consistent high guard helped stifle Bowen's heavier punches early in the sixth, though Bowen had him hurt midway through the finale with a sharp one-two combination and suddenly the 32-year-old embraced damage limitation mode. Virtually celebrating and glad to go the distance as he heard the final bell, it said all you needed to know.
