Conor McGregor's teased boxing exhibition match in India against Logan Paul has stalled.
The Irishman said Thursday that the UFC has pumped the brakes on the event after McGregor announced in December that preliminary agreements were made for the crossover clash.
“It is what it is. The UFC just aren’t into it," McGregor told Dave "The Schmo" Schmulenson on Thursday while promoting a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship event taking place Saturday in Philadelphia.
"The offer was there on the table in writing ... both [Paul and I] are under the TKO banner. UFC and WWE, both rising up. You know, the stock price of TKO Holding Ground [is] through the roof. New market in India opened up and booming. It was business savvy and business sense to make the fight happen. Or should I say – the glorified spar happen."
McGregor, 36, hasn’t competed in the UFC since 2021 when he suffered a leg fracture in a technical knockout loss to Dustin Poirier. The former two-division UFC champion was originally slated to return to the octagon in June to headline UFC 303 in Las Vegas against Michael Chandler but a foot injury forced him to withdraw.
McGregor has struggled in recent years, going 1-3 in his last four fights, with just one victory since 2016. In 2017, he made his professional boxing debut in a lucrative fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., losing by knockout in the 10th round.
UFC president Dana White has stated in recent months that McGregor, now a part owner of BKFC, is expected to return to the UFC in 2025.
“In between this waiting period that we find ourselves in before I can get back to the octagon, it made perfect sense on the calendar to go ahead with [the Paul exhibition],” said McGregor. “The UFC weren’t into it. I’m not sure what the WWE's interest in it was. I just knew the UFC weren’t into it. And Logan, he just kept quiet. He didn't say nothing. I was like, 'mate, you need to say something and open your f---ing mouth.
“I’m more inclined now for this influencer f---ing whatever you call it – because it’s astronomical money. It’s astronomical, the figures. Who is there? Jake. Logan. KSI. I like the three of these guys and then all these other ones that are tussling around. So it’s an interesting little side pocket branch, we’ll call it. Stuff it down me sock and out I go.”
Paul, Jake Paul's older brother, has successfully transitioned from content creation to a thriving career in WWE in recent years. This shift follows his boxing matches over the years against opponents like Floyd Mayweather, Dillon Danis, and KSI.
While his boxing and UFC future remains unclear, McGregor teased a BKFC debut instead.
“One of these days you’ll just hear my music come onto this stage in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship and I’ll have my fist wrapped with no gloves for a fight out of nowhere. No promotion. No nothing. Just fighting a random fight on the card. That could be what the future holds. And legal making claims and all this? That’s for p-ssies," said McGregor.
