Highly-rated super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli will face Maciej Sulecki for the WBC Interim title at the Videotron Centre, Quebec City, Montreal, on June 27.
Mbilli's (28-0, 23 knockouts) promoter, Eye of The Tiger, had been in talks to face Diego Pacheco but when a deal couldn't be struck the fight was headed towards a purse bid. However, the American's promoter, Matchroom, decided to pull their fighter from the purse bid the day before it was scheduled.
After going through the WBC ratings Sulecki (33-3, 13 KOs), the sanctioning body's No. 7-ranked contender, stepped up to the plate. The 35-year-old enters off a career-best win, stopping Ali Akhmedov (TKO10) in Kazakhstan on February 28.
In the co-feature, Erik Bazinyan (32-1-1, 23 KOs) will face Steven Butler (35-5-1, 29 KOs). The two had been tabbed in an in-house Eye of The Tiger fight on March 14. However, Bazinyan sprained a ligament in his ankle putting the fight on the backburner.
Once promising heavyweight, Arslanbek Makhmudov (19-2, 18 KOs) will return against Canadian-based Jamaican Ricardo Brown (12-0, 11 KOs).
While Albert Ramirez (20-0, 17 KOs), The Ring's No. 6-rated light heavyweight, will also see action against an as yet to be announced opponent, while waiting for his world title opportunity.
Highly-regarded junior welterweight Jhon Orobio (13-0, 11 KOs), rising super middleweight Wilkens Mathieu (13-0, 9 KOs) and lightweight Luis Santana (13-0, 6 KOs) will also feature elsewhere. Their opponents will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, female junior lightweight Leila Beaudoin (12-1, 1 KO) will round out the card when facing dangerous former world title challenger Elhem Mekhaled (17-3, 3 KOs).
Mbilli, rated at No. 1 by The Ring at super middleweight, represented France at the 2016 Olympics, losing to eventual gold medalist Arlen Lopez at the quarterfinal stage. He moved to Canada, where he is now a citizen, and after taking the usual steps, has worked his way up the rankings.
The all-action 29-year-old fighter scored an eye-catching knockout over former title challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (KO 5), engaged in a thrill-a-minute war with Carlos Gongora (UD 10) stopped Rohan Murdock (RTD 6) and, most recently, bested battle-hardened former three-time world title Sergiy Derevyanchenko (UD 10) last August.
Sulecki turned professional in 2010. The Polish fighter won his first 19 fights at home before heading to America in 2015. He scored good wins over Hugo Centeno Jr. (TKO 10) and Jack Culcay (UD 10) before losing his unbeaten record to Daniel Jacobs (UD 12) in a WBA title eliminator.
The now 35-year-old returned with a win over Gabe Rosado (UD 10) to earn a shot at then-WBO middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade before losing a 12-round unanimous decision. A four-fight win streak saw him step up to face Diego Pacheco, who became the first to stop him, in six rounds. The proud Polish fighter was supposed to be fodder for Akhmedov before springing the upset.
