Chris Eubank Sr: If Junior Wants To Cement His Legacy, That Road Leads To Canelo
CHRIS EUBANK SR has condemned his son's decision to smash an egg on Conor Benn's face because the incident ‘fell short’ of their famous family's values.
Eubank Jr and Benn meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26 in a long-awaited clash which tops the inaugural Ring Magazine fight card, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
The pair came head-to-head in Manchester and London on a two-city press tour which was infamous for their initial face-off, when Eubank produced an egg from a pocket in his jacket and hit Benn with it.
The viral moment nearly caused a riot at the press conference, with Benn’s famous father Nigel chasing Eubank Jr down and grabbing him around the neck.
But while Benn Sr has been alongside his son throughout the promotion so far, Eubank Sr has been conspicuous by his absence. He was not in attendance at either press conference and is not part of Junior’s team whatsoever as it stands, leading Benn to tell his opponent: “Your dad doesn’t even like you.”
Now, during an exclusive interview with The Ring, Eubank Sr has broken his silence on Egg-gate - and criticised his son for the move.
“I was extremely disappointed by the incident at the press conference where Chris Jr smashed an egg into Conor Benn's face and his choice to use profanity,” said Eubank Sr, who recently .
“Such behaviour does not reflect the conduct I have instilled in him. The Eubank legacy is built on discipline, respect, and professionalism, and this incident falls short of those values. It's crucial that we uphold the dignity of our sport and the principles that define us.
“Junior has been taught that the warrior's path is one of honour and integrity. This path requires fierce discipline and concentration, indomitable will and resolve, and steadfast honour and integrity. Such actions that he chose to take at the press conference, undermine the very essence of what it means to be a warrior in the ring.
“We must remember that our actions, both inside and outside of the ring, reflect not only on ourselves but on the sport as a whole. Our behavior echoes into eternity. Every step we take can affect generations, for better or worse. Therefore, we must be mindful of our actions, as they have lasting impacts beyond the immediate moment.”
However, despite their current separation, the pair were reunited in their home town of Brighton Friday night when Harlem Eubank, Senior’s nephew, stopped Tyrone McKenna at the Brighton Centre. Chris Jr was in attendance to support his cousin and spoke briefly with his father backstage.
“The moment was, as it always is, meaningful,” said Eubank Sr of the encounter.
“I love my son, just as I love all my children, and I’m deeply grateful for each of them. Seeing him again, I could tell he’s grown, there’s a wisdom in his face and demeanor that wasn’t there before. No matter what has happened, I will always have Jr's back.
“As a father, I know what to look for. When you’ve lived long enough, you can see it, the shift. The naivety that once lived in his eyes? It’s gone. Replaced by experience. And experience isn’t something you just read about or get from being told. It comes from going through it. From making mistakes. From taking the hits that life throws. And that’s what I saw in him, someone who’s been through the fire, shaped by his own journey. But like all of us, the journey isn’t over yet.”
That journey for Eubank Jr could well involve a super-middleweight showdown with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the long-term holder of the Ring Magazine belt at 168lbs. Canelo takes on William Scull in his Riyadh Season debut on May 3 but a 2026 clash with Eubank has been mooted.
And Eubank Sr says the only chance his son has of beating the iconic Mexican in an ‘almost impossible’ fight is by bringing him back in as his trainer.
He said: “To beat Canelo, he must listen and adhere to his father. His trainer. The one with the all-seeing eye.
“This fight would demand absolute discipline. It would be almost impossible, but not entirely. I can see how it is done. If I take an interest in a fight, and I do have an interest in this one, it's because it is real.
“If Junior truly wants to cement his legacy, then there is only one road left. And that road leads to Canelo Alvarez.”
