If Chris Eubank Jr Wasn't Comfortable With Rehydration Clause, He Wouldn't Have Agreed To It, Says Frank Smith
The talk of rehydration clauses continues to rumble on the closer we get to Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn on April 26.

It was a major sticking point in the contract and has been a much-talked about factor in the lead-up to both this bout, and their originally scheduled fight from October 2022.

Back then, the fight was set at a catchweight limit of 157 pounds, with a rehydration clause imposed on Eubank Jr (34-3, 25 KOs) for the morning of the fight.

This time, the bout is being fought at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds, but once again, a 10-pound rehydration clause is in place for Eubank Jr, meaning the 35-year-old can't weigh more than 170 pounds on the morning of the fight, which The Ring will promote in association with SNK Games, Matchroom and Boxxer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

In 2022, Chris Eubank Sr boycotted the fight, before it was eventually cancelled, over fears for his son's safety.

Benn (23-0, 14 KOs), a career 147-pound fighter, is moving two weight classes up to fight a naturally bigger man in Eubank Jr, who recently said he was still figuring out how he would get around the 10-pound clause.

Matchroom Boxing's Chief Executive Officer Frank Smith, who represents Benn but finds himself in the awkward position of being in a relationship with Eubank Jr's sister Emily, says that, at the end of the day, a contract was signed and that's all there is to it.

"You've got to remember the limit for the first fight, the fight that didn't happen," Smith told The Ring's Louis Hart.

"160 pounds is his weight, he's been at 168 as well I believe but 160 is the one he's always focussed on. 10 pounds is a lot of weight and we're talking about the first thing next morning, not fight night.

"He's going to be a lot bigger than Conor Benn, he's 147 fighter, he's a much smaller man, that's the reality of it, he's coming up in weight, that's why it's here, the second day weigh-in.

"Chris has accepted it, it's a negotiation, isn't it? Just like Conor coming to 160 when the original fight was at 157. It's a negotiation, that's what we're all in."

Smith also hinted that there would be a punishment in place for Eubank Jr if he were to forgo the rules of the rehydration clause.

"There'll be certain ramifications for that," Smith said.

"We have to protect, on the other side, Conor Benn, that he's not fighting someone who's so many pounds heavier, that's why this process is here, because ultimately, Conor's making a big jump, just as Chris has agreed to do a second day weigh-in.

"They've both accepted things to make this fight happen, they've both moved on things, that's why you're seeing the fight.

"If [Eubank Jr] wasn't comfortable with it, he wouldn't have agreed to it. That's the reality of it."
