Will Bomac make a difference in Chris Eubank Jr.'s corner? Hearn, Shalom have their say
LONDON, England — Chris Eubank Jr. accepted that, all things considered, perhaps he underestimated Conor Benn's toughness and steely resolve to endure a gruelling 12-round duel in what proved an entertaining April firefight.

Seven months later, they'll battle again Saturday night on DAZN PPV to complete their two-fight series and end a chapter opened by their famous fathers 35 years ago.

Eubank (35-3, 25 KOs) just turned 36. Benn is seven years his junior and reiterated his wish to move back down, challenging for world honours at welterweight in the new year - whether that be Mario Barrios for the WBC belt he so dearly desires, or others.

"I feel flattered you've brought him in. You're a great coach, Bomac, I've got a lot of love for you ... but you can't polish a turd," is how Benn welcomed the re-introduction of Brian 'Bomac' McIntyre to Team Eubank at September's inaugural press conference.

Others were more excited, especially fresh after watching Bomac spearhead the corner for Terence Crawford's legacy-enhancing win over Canelo Alvarez days earlier in their Las Vegas megafight. One in particular, was Eubank's promoter and BOXXER chief Ben Shalom.

When asked why he and others felt so confident their man would deliver a more comprehensive victory, Shalom pointed to disruptive factors behind-the-scenes as well as a weapon Eubank used once before to great effect.

"Everything was new, from rehydration clauses and co-promotional politics to external hurdles, but I've been with Chris a while now and never seen him more hungry and dangerous than when he had Bomac with him for the Liam Smith rematch," he told The Ring.

Eight months after suffering a career-first stoppage defeat by Smith in January 2023, Eubank was markedly different in their rematch, twice dropping the former junior middleweight champion en route to a 10th-round finish.

The counter would be that Smith, two years older and with more miles on the clock, wasn't at his physical peak. A back injury saw their July date pushed back, he rushed through rehab and struggled through his weight cut, so perhaps the display flattered Eubank.

Nonetheless, Shalom believes Bomac's presence means Eubank is taking this even more seriously than before.

"There was a bit of him that underestimated Conor and yet, he still came through," he added. "That was the night to beat Chris but if you didn't do it then, you won't now and you can see he wants to make a real statement.

"Chris respects Brian. You might see the team laughing and joking but go in there and it's a military camp. Painful, hard and that's exactly what Chris needs - we know he's dedicated - but you can't compromise on Bomac's schedule, otherwise he'll just go home.

"I love the fact Brian's back in, couldn't have him for the first one and everyone talks about Eubank's business interests outside the sport but this addition will make a major difference."

When those comments were put to Eddie Hearn, he couldn't help smiling before quickly insisting that wouldn't be the case.

He told The Ring: "I don't think he'll bring anything besides motivation in camp, Bomac would make sure he trains hard - he would anyway - because he knows what he had last time.

"Chris said he didn't expect a fight like that from Conor, he knows what's coming on Saturday. Bomac is great but they're not going to change anything tactically, they've worked him hard and he'll come in great condition, that's all."

During Thursday's press conference, McIntyre matched Shalom's confident tone when asked why this rematch will be different.

"I just believe in Chris' skill, the will that he has," he said. "He wants to win, has got that killer instinct and it's easy to work with a fighter like that. I don't push guys to go for the knockout but if it's there, we gon' get it."

Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn II will headline "The Ring: Unfinished Business" and stream live on DAZN PPV from 11.45am ET/4.45pm GMT.
