Chris Eubank Jr has been fined £10,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for 'misuse of social media' in the run-up to his April clash with
Conor Benn.
Eubank Jr and Benn fought for 12 gruelling rounds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in The Ring's first ever main event two-and-a-half months ago, and it was the Brighton man who came out on top,
winning by unanimous decision.
A day before the fight, Eubank Jr was late to the weigh-in and
subsequently missed weight by half an ounce. After the 35-year-old weighed in for his middleweight contest with Benn, he released clips on social media which laid bare the lengths he went to in order to try and hit the 160-pound limit.
As a result, the Board's Southern Area Council looked into Eubank's weight-making process and held a formal hearing last week before making their decision.
A statement read: "Mr. Eubank Jnr. was found to be in breach of Regulation 25 for misuse of social media.
"The Southern Area Council fined Mr. Eubank Jnr. the sum of £10,000.
"Mr. Eubank Jnr. was confirmed as arriving late for the official weigh-in ceremony for the contest in question and received a severe reprimand placed on his file from the Southern Area Council."
Eubank Jr is required to pay the fine before the Board licence him for his scheduled rematch with Benn, which is scheduled to take place on Sept. 20 in London.
Though Eubank missed weight for his Spring duel with Benn, he hit the contractually-imposed 10-pound rehydration limit, coming in at 169.4 pounds on the morning of the fight.
The fight was a slobber-knocker and looked to have put the 35-year Eubank-Benn rivalry to bed once and for all. But His Excellency Turki Alalshikh confirmed soon after that
plans to stage the sequel, which was
formally announced last month, were already in motion.
Now the pair will mix it for the second time in just over two months' time, so long as Eubank Jr pays his fine, having already paid £100,000 to the BBBofC earlier this year for slapping Benn with an egg.
