Carrington Hopes Beating Enrique Vivas ‘Easy’ Shows He ‘Is On A Different Level,’ Secures Title Shot
LAS VEGAS – The seriousness with which Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington has taken Enrique Vivas was evident Friday afternoon.

The Brooklyn-bred featherweight contender looked through Vivas after they weighed in at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Carrington (14-0, 8 KOs) realizes that he is on the cusp of securing a 126-pound world title shot, thus he can’t afford to take his experienced opponent the least bit lightly.

Vivas has lost three times as a professional, but the durable Mexican veteran has never been beaten by knockout or technical knockout. The 30-year-old Vivas (23-3, 12 KOs), of Montebello, California, has lost only on points to featherweight contenders Ruben Villa (then 16-0), Eduardo Baez (then 20-2-2) and Joet Gonzalez (then 25-3).

“I know that he has fought top-level opposition,” Carrington told The Ring. “He has fought Eduardo Baez, he has fought Joet Gonzalez, Ruben Villa, and only lost to those caliber of guys. So, he’s definitely no one that I’m looking past. He’s definitely someone I’m looking to show if I beat him easy, it’s definitely gonna be one of those, ‘Oh, Shu Shu is on a different level,’ type of performances.”

Carrington-Vivas will be streamed by ESPN+ as part of the Mikaela Mayer-Sandy Ryan undercard at Fontainebleau’s BleuLive Theater.

Mayer-Ryan undercard coverage is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT). ESPN’s doubleheader will start at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT).

A knockout victory over Vivas would enhance Carrington’s reputation within the featherweight division. He is already ranked No. 1 by both the WBC and WBO, whereas the WBA lists him at No. 2, the IBF rates him fourth and The Ring has him at No. 8 in its top 10.

“He’s a very durable guy,” Carrington said. “He’s never been knocked out. He throws a lot of punches, has an engine on him, puts on a lotta pressure. So, it’s something that me and my camp have noticed. We’ve prepared for that, so we will be able to match his engine, and then some, because I definitely feel that I’m more skillful, have a deeper bag when it comes to like different tricks and whatnot. Just my approach to the game when it comes to fighting, and that’ll definitely give me the edge.”

Carrington-Vivas is a WBC elimination match. If Carrington wins, the WBC will likely name him its mandatory challenger for its newly crowned featherweight champion, Stephen Fulton.

Philadelphia’s Fulton (23-1, 8 KOs) doesn’t have a fight scheduled because he beat Brandon Figueroa (25-2-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 12-round rematch February 1 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mexico’s Rafael Espinoza (26-0, 22 KOs) is set to defend his WBO featherweight title against Edward Vazquez (17-2, 4 KOs), of Fort Worth, Texas, on the Naoya Inoue-Ramon Cardenas undercard May 4 at T-Mobile Arena.
