Caroline Dubois Survives Spirited Bo Mi Re Shin Surge Late, Retains WBC Lightweight Title
ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON -- Caroline Dubois continued to stake her claim as the best lightweight on the planet with a comprehensive victory over Bo Mi Re Shin, despite a drawn 95-95 scorecard in the Natasha Jonas vs. Lauren Price co-feature.

The 24-year-old had to cling on in the final round as the South Korean challenger piled on the pressure in search of a stunning upset victory.

Dubois, however, successfully navigated the final two minutes and was rewarded with a controversial majority decision victory on the cards. It was South Korean judge Jae Bong Kim who scored it 95-95 even but Victor Loughlin (98-93) and Perla Rodriguez (98-92) both rightfully agreed Dubois was a worthy winner.

BOXXER's full five-fight card, headlined by Natasha Jonas vs. Lauren Price, is being televised on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports+ across the United Kingdom.

The Shane McGuigan-trained champion's first official defence of her WBC lightweight title took place on January 11 in Sheffield but ended in a frustrating technical draw with Jessica Camara after a clash of heads opened up a cut.

But, despite one dubious scorecard, Dubois would not be denied her first victory as full WBC champion this time around.

The Royal Albert Hall was packed by the time the champion walked out to a deafening reception, while Mi Re Shin ran around inside the ring waiting for the titleholder's arrival.

But the 30-year-old from Seoul, South Korea who arrived in London on a three-fight winning streak, had no intention of running once the action started.

The orthodox challenger was looking to paw away Dubois’ lead southpaw hand before landing with a long straight right hand. But Dubois was equal to all her attacks in the opening round, while attempting to score with the left bolo which has been a honey punch for her in the past.

And the champion began to turn the screw in the second, landing a lead hook to the head early in the round. After that, there was a clear switch of attack to the body with Shin shipping a pair of right hooks downstairs.

Then, as the round drew to a close, the challenger appeared to remonstrate momentarily to referee Mark Lyson and Dubois took full advantage, spearing in a left hand to the head just before the bell.

It was a similar story in the third, with Dubois leaving her opponent chasing shadows for much of the round. The champion was in total control and had little trouble landing to head or body.

Once again, Dubois just cranked up the heat slightly in the fourth and started to throw to the head with more purpose. She wobbled Shin badly in the final few seconds of the round with a straight left but there was not enough time left for her to capitalise.

The fifth looked like a thankless task for the challenger, who continued to stomp forward with a high guard only for Dubois to land in twos and threes before exiting successfully without any danger of a counter. And the more Shin attempted to force the action, the more exquisitely Dubois picked her off on the back foot.

But a right hand from Shin got her corner very excited in the ninth and she managed to follow it up with a second in quick succession, which gave Dubois something to think about as she headed into the 10th and final round.

Shin continued to pour on the pressure in the final two minutes as she went in search of the most unlikely smash-and-grab stoppage. But Dubois managed to hold on tight until the final bell to secure her split decision win.

"Bo was very rough and tough, that's what we expected," Dubois said during her post-fight interview, with McGuigan revealing his fighter had been battling a virus over the previous ten days.

"Maybe I gave her a chance at the end but I feel like I need to learn how to fight on the inside. It's one thing doing it in sparring but it's different in a fight."
