Unified super middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was shaking his head over the controversial call from last Saturday night, when lightweight champion Gervonta Davis fought Lamont Roach to a twelve round draw at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
During the ninth round of the contest, Davis seemingly turned away from Roach and took a knee in order to call for a timeout - as he wanted his corner to rub his face with a towel. Davis claimed that a grease-based substance, which was used for his hair, was leaking down his face and hindering his vision.
Referee Steve Willis took a lot of heat for not calling a knockdown when Davis took a knee. And some pundits felt Davis could have been disqualified when his corner came up to the ring to wipe his face.
The fight would end in a controversial majority draw. On Friday, the New York State Athletic Commission would officially rule that the draw outcome would stand.
“In my opinion it was a draw,” Canelo told HOT 97. “He took a knee. You need to lose, like, 10-8 that round, at least. Plus, the corner go up and put a towel in the face, that’s a disqualification for sure. But it’s not my business. I’m talking about the rules, but it’s not my business."
