This is how judges assigned by NSAC score fights with Canelo, Crawford
Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will see some familiar faces at ringside September 13 in Las Vegas.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has approved Nevada’s Tim Cheatham, California’s Max De Luca and New Jersey’s Steve Weisfeld as the three judges for their highly anticipated showdown. California’s Thomas Taylor was also approved as the referee for a 12-round super middleweight title fight Netflix will stream worldwide from Allegiant Stadium.

Weisfeld has judged eight of Alvarez’s past nine fights in Las Vegas and five consecutive, dating to his rematch with Gennadiy Golovkin in September 2018 at T-Mobile Arena. Most notably recently, Weisfeld scored Mexico’s Alvarez a 115-113 loser to Dmitriy Bivol in May 2022 and a 115-113 winner over Golovkin in their third fight in September 2022, both at T-Mobile.

Crawford is also very familiar with Weisfeld’s work.

Weisfeld has scored seven of the four-division champion’s fights since February 2016.

He had Crawford ahead by only one point, 86-85, when the Omaha, Nebraska, native stopped Shawn Porter in the 10th round of their November 2021 bout at T-Mobile. Weisfeld later had Crawford in front of Errol Spence Jr., 79-70, before he won by ninth-round technical knockout in July 2023 at T-Mobile and credited Crawford with a 115-113 victory versus Israil Madrimov last August 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

Cheatham has worked three of Alvarez’s bouts overall — two in Las Vegas and another in Arlington, Texas. He scored Alvarez a 117-110 winner against Jaime Munguia 15 months ago at T-Mobile, a 115-113 loser to Bivol and had Alvarez in front 77-75 when Billy Joe Saunders suffered a fractured eye socket and couldn’t continue after the eighth round in May 2021.

De Luca has also been assigned to three of Alvarez’s fights.

He credited Alvarez for a 118-109 victory over Edgar Berlanga on September 14 at T-Mobile, another 118-109 win against Jermell Charlo in September 2023 at the same venue and had him ahead of Saunders by two more points than Cheatham, 78-74, when their fight ended.

Cheatham and De Luca have scored two of Crawford’s fights apiece.

Like Weisfeld, Cheatham had Crawford way ahead of Spence, 79-70. De Luca had Crawford in front of Porter slightly more comfortably than Weisfeld, 87-84, before the 10th round began.

Taylor has officiated only one Alvarez fight, his points win against Munguia.

Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) has moved up two weight classes to challenge Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) for the Guadalajara native’s Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles. The Ring ranks Crawford third on its pound-for-pound list, five spots atop Alvarez.

Crawford, 37, will end a 13-month layoff when he faces Alvarez, 35, who has fought twice since Crawford’s last appearance against Madrimov.
