Canelo and Scull make weight ahead of undisputed super-middleweight showdown
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saul "Canelo" Alvarez weighed in a pound heavier than 6ft William Scull then roared: “I dont f---ing care about the height difference.”

Ring Magazine champion Canelo tipped the scales at 167.1lbs, his heaviest since he beat Jermell Charlo in September, while Scull, who will enjoy a reasonable height advantage Saturday night on DAZN, came in at 166.1lbs.

The pair will meet for all four super-middleweight belts at ANB Arena in the first of Canelo’s outings with Riyadh Season and his first professional fight outside of North America.

After their final face off, WBA, WBO and WBC champion Canelo was asked if Scull’s range might be a factor in the fight. He said: “I don’t really f---ing care about the height. When you’re a good fighter, it doesn’t matter.

“This is a beautiful experience and it’s really nice to have the support of everyone. I’m fulfilling one of my dreams by fighting in a new country and that’s obviously why I’m going to put on a show.”

Canelo relinquished his IBF title last year, which allowed Scull to win the vacant strap with a victory over Vladimir Shishkin in October. It means the Mexican is vying to win the IBF belt for the first time since his victory over Caleb Plant in November 2021, which was also the last time he registered an inside-distance win.

The lighter Scull said: “The difference in weight is not much, but I know what I need to do. I have done my gameplan and that’s what I’m going to adhere to.”

In the other world title fight on the card, Badou Jack and Norair Mikaeljan successfully made cruiserweight as WBC champion Jack was bang on the 200lb limit while champion in recess Mikaeljan was noticeably lighter at 198.1lb.

Afterwards, Mikaeljan said of his opponent: “He says age is just a number but his birth certificate says he’s 41, so he’s 41. He’s a veteran who has been in the game for a long time, I respect that and I definitely won’t underestimate him. Tomorrow’s my night.”

Jack, fighting for the first time in two years and two months, fired back: “I’m not 41, look at him - he looks 10 years older than me.”

Bruno Surace and Jaime Munguia were backed by vociferous support inside the Studio at BLVD City as they made weight ahead of their rematch, which provided a glimpse of the atmosphere which will await them at the arena Saturday night. Once they stepped on the scales, they were both 167.7lbs.

Earlier, there was a 59lb weight disparity between DR Congo’s Martin Bakole and Nigerian Efe Ajagba ahead of their all-Africa derby.

The 20-1 (14) Ajagba, who is the No.10-rated heavyweight, was a lean 240lb while Ring No.8 Bakole was 299lbs, which was 11lbs lighter than he was when he was knocked out by Joseph Parker in Riyadh on Feb. 22.

After a fiery back-and-forth at the final press conference on Thursday, it was a relatively low-key final head-to-head after the weigh-in. Ajagba said: “I’m very confident and I’m just here to fight and I’m looking forward to tomorrow night.”

Bakole added: “I’m going to save it for tomorrow. The talking is over and the best man will win tomorrow.”

But that was not the biggest gap in weight on the card as former cruiserweight world title challenger Richard Riakporhe came in at 235lbs for his debut at heavyweight - more than 60lbs lighter than his 9-9 (4) opponent Kevin Espindola (297),

On his move to heavyweight, Londoner Riakporhe said: “It feels really good. I can eat normally, I feel more healthy and I’m punching hard.”

Elsewhere, Olympic silver medalist Marco Verde, who competed at 71kg at Paris 2024, weighed in at 158.7lbs ahead of his professional debut while his opponent Michel Polina was a pound heavier at 159.8.

In the card’s other Mexico derby, Brayan Leon came in at 169.1lbs while his opponent Aaron Rocha Guerrero was three less at 166.1.
