Canelo Alvarez Thinks He Will Retire At 37; Believes This Version Of Him Would Beat A 26-Year-Old Canelo
NEW YORK – Canelo Alvarez will turn 35 on July 18.

The Mexican legend is also on track to complete his 20th year as a professional boxer late in October. With 66 pro bouts on his record and more money than his grandchildren could spend, Alvarez still isn’t thinking about retirement.

And not just because the Guadalajara native is contractually obligated to fight four more times as part of the agreement Alvarez reached with Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season early in February.

“I feel like I’m in my prime,” Alvarez told The Ring recently. “If you put me in a fight with 28-, 27-, 26-year-old Canelo Alvarez, I would beat him. So, I feel great.”

This 34-year-old version of Alvarez is a 30-1 favorite, according to DraftKings, to defeat unbeaten Cuban William Scull on May 3 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) can become a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion by conquering Scull (23-0, 9 KOs), who owns the IBF 168-pound crown Alvarez vacated late last July, in their DAZN Pay-Per-View main event.

Alvarez, who is ranked No. 7 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, will defend his Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO belts that night. Scull, The Ring’s fifth-ranked super middleweight contender, won a then-unclaimed IBF belt by unanimously outpointing Russia’s Vladimir Shishkin (16-1, 10 KOs) in a closely contested 12-rounder October 19 at Stadthalle in Falkensee, Germany.

If Alvarez handles business basically foisted upon him by the IBF, the former junior middleweight, middleweight and light heavyweight champion will secure a showdown with another four-division champion, Terence Crawford.

An agreement is in place for Alvarez and Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) to headline a September 13 card at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, assuming Alvarez gets by Scull. The 37-year-old Crawford, of Omaha, Nebraska, would move up two weight classes, from 154 pounds to 168, to challenge Alvarez.

Alvarez, boxing’s biggest star in the United States, will likely complete half of his Riyadh Season commitment by mid-September. He could see himself fighting for approximately two more years thereafter.

“I’m gonna do these four fights and we’ll see what happens after that,” Alvarez said. “I always said like 37 is what I think [as a retirement age], but we don’t know yet.”

It still hasn’t hit the first-ballot Hall-of-Famer that almost 20 years have passed since he made his pro debut as an unknown 15-year-old in October 2005. Alvarez was a junior welterweight when he stopped countryman Abraham Gonzalez (then 0-1) in the final round of their four-rounder that night at Arena Chololo Larios in Tonala, Mexico, just outside of Guadalajara.

“I don’t think about it much,” Alvarez said. “I’m just doing it. I still love boxing. And when you look back on 20 years as a professional fighter, it’s a long way.”

The show headlined by Alvarez-Scull costs $59.99 if purchased individually. Consumers can also buy it as part of a bundle with another DAZN Pay-Per-View show, The Ring’s “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves” event in New York’s Times Square the previous night, for $89.99.

The four-fight Times Square card will feature welterweights Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC) and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) in the 12-round main event.
