Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford: A Look At Their Top Five Wins

The pair have more than 100 wins between them across their Hall of Fame careers, but which of the lot were the best? We take a look at their top fives, most recent fights first, ahead of their showdown on Sept. 13.

CALEB PLANT, Nov. 6, 2021, MGM Grand, Las Vegas – TKO11
Alvarez had already beaten Callum Smith to claim both the WBA and (vacant) WBC titles before he stopped another undefeated Brit, Billy Joe Saunders, to add the WBO belt to his collection. He became undisputed champion by beating Plant, and he did it in style, dropping and stopping the IBF champion, who was 21-0 at that time.

SERGEY KOVALEV, Nov. 2, 2019, MGM Grand, Las Vegas – KO11
This was not Alvarez at his most dominating. The scorecards at the time of the stoppage, which read 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95, tell the story of a close fight. Even so, in the final minute of the 11th round, Alvarez found a finish against ‘Krusher’ Kovalev, one of the most destructive punchers of the generation. It also secured the Mexican icon, who started his career at junior welterwight, his first and only world title at light heavyweight, which remains the highest weight at which he has fought.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN, Sept. 15, 2018, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas – MD12
Alvarez dominated an aging Golovkin in their third and final fight in 2022, but his most memorable performance in this classic trilogy came in their second encounter, 364 days after their first fight resulted in a controversial draw. This time, Canelo edged a majority decision by the finest of margins – 114-114 and 115-113 twice – in what was later named The Ring’s “Fight of the Year.”

MIGUEL COTTO, Nov. 21, 2015, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas – UD12
This was one of the most important victories in Alvarez’s career. The Guadalajara native was a 3-1 favorite to beat Cotto and claim the middleweight title for the first time. Although the scorecards suggested a landslide for Canelo, he had to work throughout all 12 rounds in a highly competitive fight against the Puerto Rican star. This one was also crucial for boxing as a whole. The roughly 900,000 buys it did on pay-per-view was the highest figure recorded by anyone outside the box office triumvirate of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and Oscar De La Hoya since Lennox Lewis fought Mike Tyson in 2002, thus signaling Alvarez’s arrival as a bona fide pay-per-view star.

MATTHEW HATTON, March 5, 2011, Honda Center, Anaheim, California – UD12
This was the night a 20-year-old Alvarez won his first world title. He did so by picking apart seasoned European champion Matthew Hatton, who was 41-4-2 entering their fight. There would be no stoppage for the young Mexican on this night, but the three identical scorecards of 119-108 tell the story of this one-sided victory for Alvarez in what was his first headline fight in the United States.

ISRAIL MADRIMOV, Aug. 3, 2024, BMO Stadium, Los Angeles – UD12
Much like Alvarez’s victory over Kovalev, this win for Crawford, against the previously undefeated Madrimov, was not a one-sided domination by any stretch. The 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 scores reflect that. But this was the night when Crawford, whose first world title was won at 135 pounds, became world champion at 154 in his very first fight at the weight and his first outing at all since he beat Errol Spence 13 months earlier.

ERROL SPENCE JR., July 29, 2023, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas – TKO9
Put simply, this nine-round masterclass was one of the most one-sided beatdowns in a genuine super fight in the history of boxing. This showdown between the two undefeated Americans had been craved by fans for many years. When it finally came, Crawford proved beyond any doubt that he was the best welterweight of the generation. All three scorecards at the time of the ninth-round stoppage read 79-70. Crawford dropped Spence once in round two and twice in round seven before the stoppage eventually came.

SHAWN PORTER, Nov. 20, 2021, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas – TKO10
Crawford had stopped all five of his opponents since stepping up to welterweight, but not many people thought the run would continue against Porter, a titan of the division and someone who had never been beaten inside the distance. What is most memorable in this fight is the moment when Crawford’s corner told him that he may be behind on the cards in the break between the ninth and 10th rounds. Crawford, irked by the suggestion, got up off his stool and ended the fight within 81 seconds of the restart.

JULIUS INDONGO, Aug. 19, 2017, Pinnacle Bank Arena, Lincoln, Nebraska – KO3
Indongo, then the IBF champion, had dominated Ricky Burns to claim the WBA super lightweight title in April 2017 to set up this undisputed showdown with Crawford. It is easy to forget that IBF and WBA champ Indongo was 22-0 and, although an underdog against Crawford, considered something of a dangerman. But he did not look like it during this three-round destruction at the hands of Crawford, who became boxing’s first undisputed junior welterweight champion of the four-belt era.

RICKY BURNS, March 1, 2014, Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow – UD12
This is an underappreciated win against a man in Burns who would go on to become Scotland’s only three-weight world champion. An untested Crawford was 22-0 when he traveled to Burns' backyard of Glasgow to topple the champion via a clear points win in his first title fight. Crawford also went 12 rounds for the first time when he beat Burns. It was the night the Omaha man came of age.
