Sam Jones has told The Ring that talk of a rematch deal being agreed between Cameron Vuong and Gavin Gwynne is premature.
Last November, Vuong (7-0, 3 KOs) jumped up several levels and took on former British, Commonwealth and European lightweight champion Gavin Gwynne (17-4-1, 5 KOs) in just his seventh professional outing.
The fight - made at 139lbs - was billed as a battle between Vuong’s skill and movement against Gwynne’s experience and educated workrate. That was exactly how it played out.
After ten intriguing rounds, Vuong was awarded a widely criticised unanimous decision but the controversy overshadowed both the result as well as the heart and composure Vuong displayed under pressure.
Vuong’s manager Jones has matched his fighter aggressively from the start of his professional career and believes the gamble paid off.
“I watched and was like, ‘Oof, this could go either way’ but thought we’d nicked the fight but I stand on the fact I believe Cameron won the fight. I thought he landed all the better shots,” he told The Ring.
“If Gavin Gwynne would have won we would have had no complaints but, ultimately, Cameron won the fight and that was his seventh professional fight. He deserves a lot of respect.
“Cameron's going to fight at the end of March in a good fight again but all Cameron's fights are good.”
If rumours are to be believed, that fight could be a long delayed meeting with his undefeated rival Jordan Flynn (11-0-1, 1 KO).
“Yeah, maybe," Jones said. “Maybe that's the fight that we're going to revisit and have a look at.”
Last week, Gwynne took to social media and implied that a deal had been struck for a rematch between he and Vuong as long as they both win intervening fights.
In recent years, boxing has been bogged down by too many needless rematches but an eventual return between Vuong and Gwynne would be both justified and meaningful.
Gwynne would have the chance to right a well perceived wrong whilst if Vuong truly is the talent he has been touted as, will learn and improve from the ten rounds he spent in the ring with the experienced Welshman and relish the opportunity to put the lessons into practice.
Jones is currently concentrating on finalising Vuong’s upcoming outing but told The Ring that whilst he isn’t against revisiting the fight at some point in the future, Gwynne jumped the gun by announcing that an agreement had been reached.
“I've seen Gavin Gwynne saying, ‘Cameron's ducking me’ but Cameron's given him an opportunity when he was out in the wilderness so he's got a lot to thank Cameron for to be honest with you,” Jones said.
“He’s had a great career but not got a promotional contract and what I said to Gavin was we're going to have this fight and if the money's correct [we’ll fight him] because I want Cameron well paid for that fight. He didn't get the respect I believe he deserved for taking it in the first place so Eddie [Hearn] is going to have to pay Cameron a lot of money to take that but, if he does, then we're straight back in.”
