Cameron Vuong-Gavin Gwynne rematch ends in majority draw
A year after their controversial first fight, Gavin Gwynne and Cameron Vuong served up another action-packed 10-rounder in Birmingham - but this time the judges could not split them.

On November 30, 2024, Vuong had edged a close decision and an incensed Gwynne had screamed robbery after appearing to dominate his younger opponent.

This time around, it was more of the same from the relentless Gwynne but he was once again denied victory by the judges, with two of them scoring it 95-95 making this a majority draw at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.

The other judge, Gergo Kovacs, surprisingly scored it 97-93 in Vuong’s favour meaning that after these 20 rounds across the two fights, Gwynne has still never won the fight in the eyes of any judges.

After the result was announced, a disappointed Gwynne said: “Obviously I thought I won. It was a close fight but in my head I thought I nicked it.

“I probably won the last fight a bit cleaner, this was a bit closer. I just boxed a bit more clever tonight, I got my jab working, that was lovely.”

Vuong (9-0-1, 4 KOs), who has won twice since his first fight with Gwynne, said: “I thought I started the fight well and won the first four and then dug deep and won the last two.”

He had indeed made a promising start against the man who had given him the hardest fight of his career to date first time around. This clash almost instantly assumed the sort of pattern many had predicted with Gwynne, all blood and thunder, marching his younger opponent down but Vuong managing to play the matador.

It was clear that Vuong had found an early groove and was able to maintain control against the marauding Gwynne, which enabled him to pick up the first three rounds without reply, but Gwynne was not looking sorry for himself.

Despite falling behind on the cards, the Welshman had been having success early on with the left hook whenever the pair came close and he really started to turn up the heat in the fifth, landing with doubles and trebles.

Vuong, however, continued to box intelligently, particularly on the counter. His accuracy was evident as, at the halfway point, the pair had landed with almost the exact same number of punches despite Gwynne throwing nearly twice as many.

In their first encounter Gwynne had grown into the fight, putting his foot down and draining the energy of Vuong as the rounds ticked by - and it was a similar story here. In the seventh and the eighth, Gwynne was forcing Vuong back to the ropes and going to work, significantly out-throwing his opponent.

The 35-year-old appeared to have zero respect for Vuong’s power and was happy to walk through anything necessary to get to the target himself. He really turned the screw as the eighth came to a close, chasing Vuong round, switching attack from head to body and back again. For the first time in this fight, the 23-year-old from Blyth had a mini crisis on his hands.

He was being implored by Lee Wylie, part of Ben Davison’s corner team, to throw the right uppercut as Gwynne stalked forward and he managed to get it off in a ninth round where he refused to be forced back to the ropes again. After such a testing eighth, it was the sort of response Vuong needed.

As they entered the 10th and final round it seemed like a fight that could still go either way. Gwynne was straight back to work, head down and cranking up the pressure but it was Vuong who produced the more eye-catching shots with those uppercuts again finding the target.

The scorecards took a while to be collated, with both men forced to stand through an agonising wait for the result. It was extended even further when the MC’s microphone didn’t work - but in the end it was a result that neither of them wanted or needed.

Elsewhere on the card ...

The undefeated 24-year-old Ibraheem Sulaimaan (10-0, 5 KOs) added to his burgeoning reputation as one of Birmingham’s most promising talents by stopping Nico Ogbeide in the sixth of this 10 rounder for the vacant Midlands Area junior-lightweight title.

There was also an eight-round points win for Zelfa Barrett over Liam Dillon at lightweight while former mixed martial artist ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann picked up her second win as a boxer, outpointing Ebonie Cotton over six twos.
