LAS VEGAS –
Callum Walsh believes he whiffed a bit in his coming-out party and unanimous decision win against
Fernando Vargas Jr. on Saturday while providing chief support to Terence Crawford's
career-defining win against Canelo Alvarez in front of over 70,000 fans at Allegiant Stadium.
Although Walsh (15-0, 11 KOs) scored a shutout on one card and lost a round on the other two cards,
he insisted he could have done more with a statement showing that was fitting for the occasion.
“It was an unbelievable experience but I do feel a bit disappointed because I wanted to be better,” Walsh said during his post-fight press conference. “At the end of the day I beat an undefeated fighter, so I'm happy … What an honor. People forget that I am still 24 years old. I am still learning, growing. I gained a lot of experience.
“I felt no pressure walking out. When I got in the ring, after the first round, I didn't feel my best. I felt sluggish, slow. After that I put a lot of pressure on myself to perform. It was frustrating because I know how good I can be, how much experience I have, and what I can do.”
Walsh outlanded Vargas 182-159 during their 10-round bout between unbeaten junior middleweight contenders but the second-generation fighter was never out of the contest, giving just as much as he was receiving. Walsh had a black eye and swelling around his face after the fight.
“It was disappointing for me because I know how much better I can be,” said Walsh. "This is all new to me, fighting on a stage this big. I'll take away a lot from the week. I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Despite the uneven performance,
the Irishman’s future is still looking bright as his Zuffa Boxing career gets set to officially get underway next year.
But before then, Walsh got an offer he couldn’t refuse.
“Turki [Alalshikh] asked me if I want to fight in November,” Walsh said. “I said no problem, let me know. We'll see who they put in front of me. I'm a simple man. I just show up and fight whoever they want me to fight.”
