Callum Walsh Aims To Become The Face of Both Irish and TKO Boxing
HOLLYWOOD, California – Much like Canelo Alvarez has controlled the fight dates around Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day Weekends in recent years, Irish junior middleweight contender Callum Walsh is looking to have a similar stronghold by fighting on St. Patrick’s Day for years to come.

Walsh will headline around the holiday for the fourth year in a row Sunday when he takes on Dean Sutherland at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York.

The fight will headline a 360 Promotions show on UFC Fight Pass in what promoter Tom Loeffler calls “the biggest Irish boxing card in New York City history.”

If all goes according to plan, “King” Walsh (12-0, 10 KOs) could also become a knightly figure and a fighting face for TKO Boxing, the upstart entity led by Turki Alalshikh and TKO Group Holdings, with executive leadership anchored by UFC President and CEO Dana White and WWE President and TKO Board Member Nick Khan.

Now that White and company are officially positioned as prime players in boxing, Walsh appears to be a frontrunner in getting some serious shine.

“If that's the path that I’m going to take, I have 100 percent confidence in my team – I trust them,” Walsh told The Ring in an interview during a recent workout at the Wild Card Boxing gym in Los Angeles. “It's very exciting. I just fight the man that's in front of me. Dana told me that 2025 is going to be a good year for me. He has plans. Let’s see what happens.”

Walsh, a 24-year-old southpaw from Cork, Ireland, fought for the first time professionally on home soil at the famed 3Arena in Dublin in September and knocked out Przemyslaw Runowski in two rounds. White was front and center giving the fight the royal treatment days after pulling off the ambitious UFC event at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

“I love Callum Walsh,” White told The Ring in an interview. “I love his style. I love the fact that he's willing to take tough fights, and I just liked the kid personally as soon as I was introduced to him. Promoting him is fun for me, and I am having fun doing it.”

Loeffler's ultimate goal is to feature Walsh in Ireland annually and he’s already working toward a potential Ireland vs. Puerto Rico showdown against Xander Zayas at Madison Square Garden. The former handler of the Klitschko brothers is also looking to replicate similar success with Walsh as he did with Gennadiy Golovkin to make the up-and-comer a household name for hardcore and casual fans alike.

Walsh had a decorated amateur career featuring 120 fights, six national titles, and a European gold medal.

“Callum is on a great track,” Loeffler told The Ring in an interview. “We don't want to rush things. His record definitely has quality opponents. I can see him fighting for a world title within two years. There is no need to rush. He is on a great trajectory. He sells tickets. He has great ratings. The UFC fans know him. The WWE fans know him. You see the popularity.”

On Monday, Walsh was sitting ringside at WWE Monday Night RAW and got an on-screen shoutout. By Tuesday, he was on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building Observation Deck to kick off fight week festivities with a faceoff against Sutherland.

“Dana has supported Callum ever since we signed him,” said Loeffler. “We couldn't build Callum's career without Dana's help. We'll see some big things coming from the TKO Group in the sport of boxing.

“Callum is going to take over Madison Square Garden during St. Patrick's Day for years to come. Callum knows that in order to keep headlining these kinds of shows, he has to fight quality opponents, and Dean is a quality opponent who is coming to win.”

Sutherland (19-1, 7 KOs) will have to withstand Walsh’s power, which has been tested in sparring sessions against the likes of Vergil Ortiz Jr., Serhii Bohachuk, Eimantas Stanionis, Elvis Rodriguez, and Gabriel Rosado, among others, in recent years.

The Freddie Roach-trained Walsh has emerged from fierce preparations to score back-to-back stoppage wins inside two rounds.

“It's the perfect day to fight for an Irish fighter, especially in New York,” said Walsh, ranked No. 6 by both the WBC and IBF. “It's like going back to Ireland for me. We are putting on some great fights, and for me to be the one headlining, I’m very grateful for it and looking forward to it.

“If I keep knocking them out quickly they have no choice but to give me bigger names and stronger opponents.

“I can get a title shot and perform and bring the world title back to Ireland. That can be a real thing for me. At the moment it looks like I have done a lot, but I have done nothing, really. I don't have the world titles. Until I have that, I'm going to keep trying to break out. I’m definitely headed in the right direction.”
