Callum Simpson, Harry Scarff, Jack Rafferty Set For British Title Defenses
The British Boxing Board of Control have released their final monthly circular of 2024.

British super middleweight champion, Callum Simpson, 15-0 (10 KOs), will defend his title against Steed Woodall, 19-2-1 (12 KOs), on January 11th.

Around 7,000 fans filed into Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium to watch Simpson take the title from Zak Chelli in August and although it is no secret that there are plans for the 28 year-old to headline another major open-air show later this year, the inhospitable Yorkshire winter means that his fanbase will make the 40 minute journey to Sheffield to watch Simpson make the first defence of his belt.

Woodall throughly deserves his chance. In June he became the first man to solve the puzzles posed by the tricky, talented and awkward Lerrone Richards and knocked the former champion out in six rounds.

On December 7th, Denzel Bentley, 21-3-1 (17 KOs), won the British middleweight title for the third time by outpointing Brad Pauls. The board have immediately ordered him to defend the belt against Commonwealth champion, Kieron Conway, 22-3-1 (6 KOs).

Bentley's victory over Pauls cemented his position as the number one contender for unified WBO and IBF middleweight champion, Janibek Alimkhanuly, and although Bentley likes to remain active, he will prioritise a rematch with the dangerous Kazakh. It is highly likely that Conway will have to wait for a further circular to find out what his future holds.

In surprise update, it was announced that welterweight champion, Harry Scarff, 13-3 (3 KOs), will defend his title against Conah Walker, 14-3-1 (5 KOs), on January 25th.

‘Horrible Harry’ won the title from Ekow Essuman last November but has yet to make a defence of his belt. In May, he lost a decision to Karen Chukhadzhian in an eliminator for Jaron Ennis’ IBF title.

Walker has been much more active. 2024 was a breakthrough year for the aggressive 29 year old. Although he lost to Lewis Crocker in June, the fight will be a surefire contender for Fight of the Year honours and in November he comfortably outpointed the experienced Lewis Ritson.

Liam Taylor has been the next man in line for some time and the winner of the fight between Scarff and Walker will have to defend the title against Taylor when called upon.

Super lightweight champion, Jack Rafferty, 24-0 (15 KOs), was due to make the first defence of his belt against his Manchester rival, Kane Gardner, in February. Two weeks ago, Gardner lost an Area title fight to Reece McMillan, 17-1 (2 KOs) and the man from Morecambe will now replace him and fight Rafferty on the undercard of the heavyweight fight between Derek Chisora and Otto Wallin.

Brandon Daord, 10-0 (3 KOs), has been waiting for a chance to fight for the super flyweight title for what seems like an eternity. The talented but unfortunate Merseysider will fight Matthew McHale, 7-0 (5 KOs), on February 8th.

British and European flyweight champion, Jay Harris, 21-3 (11 KOs), and his Commonwealth counterpart, Conner Kelsall, 12-0 (1 KO) are also edging closer to a triple title showdown. Izzy Assif of GBM Sports will host the fight early on 2025.
