Caleb Plant hopes to reboot once division settles in wake of Canelo Alvarez's defeat
Caleb Plant may have a few losses plastered to his record, but he doesn’t believe his standing at 168 pounds should be affected.

Coming up short against Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez is nothing to be ashamed of. Losing to Jose Armando Resendiz, however, was a bit alarming.

That May 31 defeat in Las Vegas didn’t shatter his confidence, though. Despite it all, the former IBF champ believes he’s still the one to beat.

“I feel like the super middleweight division is in a great spot,” Plant told The Ring recently. “A lot of big names, a lot of big fights that can be made. I feel like I’m still here at the top.”

A few weeks ago, the division gained a new champion. Terence Crawford, who moved up from 154 pounds, beat Alvarez for his Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO titles.

Although Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) told the sold-out crowd of more than 70,000 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas that he felt comfortable, he was noncommittal on his future.

That, in turn, places Plant in limbo. The 33-year-old doesn't have a fight date lined up, but he’s stated on numerous occasions that he'd prefer Jermall Charlo, Edgar Berlanga or Jaime Munguia.

Those fights may still happen, but Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) has some things to clean up. Against Resendiz, he was outworked and outmuscled. The fancy footwork he normally shows and eye-catching combinations were absent.

It wasn’t his proudest moment, but Plant feels he learned from it. And while a loss normally pushes someone toward the bottom of the ladder, he’s confident that his name and star power still command respect.

“I’m in a position to give the fans and boxing more big fights,” Plant said.
