Most observers enjoyed watching Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa go at it this past Saturday night. Bruce Carrington did as well but he didn’t tune in out of just pure enjoyment.
Viewed as a competitive fight on paper, Fulton went on to dominate his man, winning a wide decision and the WBC featherweight title. To a large extent, Carrington was impressed. From the way Fulton carried himself on the inside to the way he outboxed his man on the outside, he was practically picture-perfect.
Still, even though Carrington loves what he seen, he isn’t convinced that Fulton is on his level.
“I got hell of respect for Fulton,” said Fulton to The Ring recently. “But I genuinely feel like I’m the better fighter between the two of us. I feel like I box better than him, I feel like I fight better on the inside than him, I feel like I’m faster than him, stronger than him.”
For some fighters, being ranked highly in certain sanctioning bodies determines the road they’ll take. Carrington, however, can pick and choose which champion he would rather face.
In the IBF, Brooklyn’s Carrington (14-0, 8 KOs) has the number four slot. In the WBC, WBA, and WBO, he’s their top-ranked fighter. Although he’s done all of the leg work and could push for a world title shot immediately, he’ll return to the ring on March 29th, against Enrique Vivas to iron out the wrinkles in his game.
As long as he wins, little will change in terms of Carrington’s position. The IBF, WBO, and WBA titles are all prestigious in their own right. They also shine brightly when held up to the light. For Carrington though, there’s something about the WBC’s green and gold title that grabs his attention. Because of that, all of his focus will be placed on putting that one on his mantle first.
“I really believe I’ll become WBC world champion.”
