Kevin Brown Wins Wide Unanimous Decision; Yoenis Tellez Earns Stoppage In Return
ORLANDO — Kevin Brown withstood a tough test from Amos Cowart to win a unanimous decision at Caribe Royale on Saturday night.

The fight felt much closer than what the final scorecards read. The ascending Cuban contender won 100-90 across all three.

Brown (9-0, 3 KOs) was originally scheduled to face Cletus Seldin in a 12-round fight for the interim WBA 140-pound title, but he returned an adverse finding for elevated levels of testosterone, which led to his withdrawal from the bout. Cowart was already scheduled to fight on the card against Jusiyah Shitley.

For most of the first half of the fight, it was Amos (13-3-1, 10 KOs) pushing the pace on the front foot, while Brown was consistently on the move along the ropes. Amos found success going to the body, while Brown was able to split his guard and land eye-catching shots.

As the fight entered the second half, Amos stayed on the front foot but his pace and output lessened. Brown was beginning to find more success with his movement. He had more countering Amos and punching between his shots as they entered the home stretch. While Amos slowed down, he still landed his overhand left.

In the final round, Brown and Amos went toe-to-toe and traded shots in the final 10 seconds until the bell.

Brown entered the fight ranked seventh by the WBA.

The rest of the results from the Boxlab Promotions card:

  • Yoenis Tellez def. Kendo Castaneda TKO6

Tellez is back in the win column. The former interim WBA 154-pound titlist delivered a workmanlike performance, dropping Castaneda once before his corner stopped the fight after the fifth round.

After a slow first round, Tellez (11-1, 8 KOs) found his range in the second. In the third, he rocked the Castaneda with a chopping right hand. Tellez followed up with more power shots before he dropped Castaneda with a left hook to the body later in the round.

Tellez, 25, continued the punishment in the fourth and hurt the tough but overmatched Castaneda (21-13, 9 KOs) again to the body early in the fifth. Not long after the bell rang, Castaneda’s corner stopped the fight before the sixth.

“I feel great,” Tellez told The Ring via translator. “I feel fantastic about my training and with my new team. I understand how to be a pro, and I was very focused on boxing and in training camp.”

Tellez, who is ranked No. 4 by the WBA, was in his first fight since losing his interim WBA title via unanimous decision in a back-and-forth bout against Abass Baraou on Aug. 23.

  • Jasmine Artiga def. Stephanie Silva via unanimous decision

Artiga stayed undefeated to retain her WBA 115-pound title. Artiga won 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93 across the three scorecards to successfully defend her belt for a second time.

Artiga (15-0-1, 7 KOs) landed the sharper shots against Silva (10-2), who was ineligible to win the title after missing weight by more than four pounds. Silva had her moments as well when she was able to push Artiga back and land in exchanges with the champion.

Ultimately, the cleaner work of Artiga gave her the edge. After the fight, Artiga called for unification bouts with the other champions at 115.

  • Jordan Orozco Hernandez def. Karlo Rodriguez TKO8

Hernandez maintained his perfect knockout rate, dropping Rodriguez twice before stopping him 19 seconds into the eighth round in a clash of undefeated bantamweight prospects.

Hernandez (15-0, 15 KOs) of Nicaragua dropped Rodriguez in the second round with an overhand right as they were exchanging punches. After the early knockdown, the two fighters maintained a frantic pace, with both having their moments and landing big shots.

In the final seconds of the seventh, Hernandez connected with a huge overhand right that sent Rodriguez (9-1-1, 6 KOs) face-first to the canvas. Rodriguez rose on unsteady legs, but was saved by the bell.

Hernandez wasted no time going after Rodriguez and rocked the Puerto Rican along the ropes before the referee stepped in to stop the fight.
