Brock Jarvis’ career was in the abyss just a few short years ago.
Back in 2022, a young Jarvis went from fighting journeymen and club-level fighters to taking on an established name in Liam Paro. In situations such as those, simply putting on a good performance can push someone into the spotlight. Jarvis though, failed to do even that, losing via first-round stoppage.
Despondency may have set in but after some soul-searching, he picked himself up and grabbed two consecutive victories. Now, thanks to his recent form, the boxing Gods have thrown him a bone.
In the main event slot at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, tomorrow night, Jarvis will face off against his first former world champion in Keith Thurman.
Jarvis has been candid during the build-up. He looks at Thurman’s age, 36, and his inactivity, two fights in six years, as a reason why he should be favored. But, according to oddsmakers, Jarvis is a sizable underdog.
By and large, the 27-year-old believes he’s being overlooked. But while he has the right to be upset and annoyed, he’s looking at the bigger picture and wants to take full advantage.
“This is my opportunity and I’ve worked so hard to get here,” said Jarvis to a group of reporters.
Those dimly lit and muggy gyms that reside in Australia were Jarvis’ home for the last few years. And, in order to prepare for Thurman, he’s spent even more time than usual in those gladiator-building environments.
In addition to preparing his body, Jarvis has been prepping his mind. Doing that involves watching endless tapes of Thurman. But there’s a problem with that, Thurman hasn’t put out any recent footage.
The last time he was seen in the ring, the former unified welterweight champ was busy scoring a wide unanimous decision win over Mario Barrios in 2022.
Time away from the sport aside, Jarvis knows that his name doesn’t exactly ring bells. Thurman’s, on the other hand, certainly does. Going out there and competing wouldn’t be enough. Winning and doing so impressively, however, is what he needs to launch his career into another stratosphere.
“An opportunity like this comes once in a lifetime,” continued Jarvis. “I’ve dedicated my life to the sport. To me, this fight means everything. I'm ready to perform.”
