There were a few question marks surrounding Brian Norman Jr. At times, he looked spectacular but far too often, he looked listless in the ring and underperformed. Couple that with a recent hand injury that forced immediate surgery, and some were unsure how he would look in his subsequent return.
Against Derrieck Cuevas, however, he was as deadly as ever.
In practically no time at all, Norman ran through his man, pummeling him and eventually stopping him in the third round this weekend. Once the dust settled and Norman’s hand was raised in victory, microphones were thrown in his face. Questions came from right, left, and center but the overall theme of it surrounded his next move. That, ultimately, was an easy one to answer.
“What I want next is one of these belts,” said Norman to a group of reporters.
If the WBO champ wants his dreams to come true, he’ll have a few names to deal with, mainly, Jaron Ennis. The Ring’s No. 1 ranked welter and current IBF belt holder has the same aspirations but he’s moving a bit faster than Norman.
In the coming weeks, he’ll find himself standing across the ring from WBA titlist, Eimantas Stanionis. Ennis, according to oddsmakers and practically everyone, heads into their showdown as the favorite but Stanionis brings a ton to the table in his own right, something Norman acknowledges.
When the calendar officially hits April 12th, the 24-year-old will be glued to his television screen watching closely. When it came to picking a winner, Norman kept that to himself. In the end, he doesn't really care who wins. The only thing that matters is getting his hands on the winner.
“I’m right here," continued Norman. "After they fight, I’m right here. I’m still in the welterweight division. I got a belt too, you see what I just did to dude? I can do y’all the same way.”
