After flatlining Erickson Lubin in the second round last weekend, Vergil Ortiz stood face-to-face with Jaron Ennis in the center of the ring at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
It all seemed like the perfect buildup to a fight that’s been marinating for a few years.
For the most part, all parties appear interested in making it happen next. Yet, even with all signs pointing toward a matchup in early 2026, Ortiz, The Ring’s No. 1 ranked 154-pounder and WBC interim champion, recently admitted that, while fighting Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) was a priority, he would also love to mix it up with former unified welterweight champ, Errol Spence.
Upon hearing the news, Derek “Bozy” Ennis, Jaron’s father and trainer, seemed dumbfounded but unbothered. If Team Ortiz wants to entertain a fight with Spence, then so be it, but on their side of things, they only have one fight on their mind.
“If you wanna fight us, then fight,” Ennis Sr. said to The Ring. “All that other stuff about fighting Spence and all that, that’s on them. They gotta worry about that, we ain’t worried about that. We worried about fighting him.”
Spence, of course, hasn't been seen since being dominated by Terence Crawford in July 2023. Ennis, on the other hand, is red hot.
On October 11 in Philadelphia, Ennis made his 154-pound debut. The switch-hitting star, much like Ortiz, barely broke a sweat, beating Uisma Lima via first-round stoppage.
In the past, Ennis has discussed his desire to become a two-division champion. And, unlike his previous stop, he would like to do more than become a unified titlist. But even with undisputed glory on his mind, The Ring’s No. 7-ranked junior middleweight contender wants a piece of Ortiz next.
As for how their mega showdown would play out, Ennis Sr. knows a talented fighter when he sees one.
“Vergil’s a good fighter,” he said. “You can’t take nothing away from him.”
