The amateurs and pro games might be completely different but Andy Cruz is confident that the results will never change.
No matter how many times he tried, Keyshawn Davis simply couldn’t figure Cruz out. And, with each win, it emboldened the former amateur star. When they ran into each other one final time, Davis was forced to accept an Olympic silver medal.
Although he failed to have any amateur success against him, Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) has made two promises. One is that they will meet in the pros. Two, that the results will be vastly different.
“Bozy” Ennis, the man who was handpicked by Cruz himself to help guide his career, has done a masterful job thus far. The 29-year-old may have only five fights under his belt but he’s looked incredibly smooth, resulting in several high rankings from the sanctioning bodies.
Naturally, any trainer, no matter the circumstances, would stand firmly in the corner of their fighter. Ennis though, is pragmatic. So, when asked if Cruz could continue his amateur success against The Ring’s No. 5 ranked lightweight, he straddled the fence.
“I don’t know about that until they fight,” said Ennis to a group of reporters when asked if Cruz could beat Davis. “Both of them are good fighters. So when the time comes, we’ll tell then.”
Cruz, just recently, picked up the fifth win of his career, a lopsided decision over Omar Salcido Gamez. A decent win without question and one that will result in him being pushed up the lightweight ladder. Davis though, is already nearing the top of the mountain.
On February 14th, at The Theater in New York’s Madison Square Garden, a world title will be on the line when Davis takes on Denys Berinchyk.
Somewhere in Philadelphia, Ennis will have his feet kicked up as he cheers Davis on. His expectation, unsurprisingly, is that he gets it done. That supposed victory, while great for Davis, might just push a matchup with Cruz further and further out.
“I don’t know,” explained Ennis when asked when he expects Davis and Cruz to get it on. “Keyshawn is on another level but we’ll be there anytime.”
