Boxing is Not The Same Without Ryan Garcia, Says De La Hoya
The red carpet has been rolled out for Ryan Garcia’s return.

Garcia will headline a card presented by The Ring on May 2 in New York’s Times Square against Rolando Romero for the WBA “world” welterweight title, and on Tuesday, the principals gathered in Manhattan to begin the promotional tour for the tripleheader, in conjunction with “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves.”

“Ryan Garcia is back. Boxing needs Ryan Garcia. Boxing without Ryan Garcia is not the same sport.” Hall of Fame fighter turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya proclaimed.

“Ryan facing Rollies is going to be exciting. It's going to be one of those fights that you don't want to miss. Rollies throw bombs. He's a fighter who can come and fight. You don't know where those bombs are coming from. When they land, they can do some damage. Ryan is coming off a one-year layoff. He's hungry to get on top of the boxing world. He's hungry to become a world champion.”

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) will fight for the first time since facing Devin Haney on April 20. In that bout, after a tumultuous promotional tour, Garcia exceeded the 140-pound weight limit by 3.2 pounds and managed to drop Haney three times, earning a majority decision victory. However, the result was later changed to a No Contest after Garcia tested positive for the PED ostarine. He was subsequently fined, suspended, and faced a lawsuit from Haney for battery, fraud, and breach of contract.

Haney will face former unified junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez in the co-main event. If Haney and Garcia both win, they’ll meet in an October rematch.

“May 2 will be one for the history books,” said De La Hoya, who’s also backing Arnold Barboza Jr. in his fight against Teofimo Lopez Jr. on the same card.

“A full-scale sanctioned professional fight held in Times Square, which will be unprecedented. The sport of boxing will be on the global stage that evening with the bright lights of New York front and center. This is what American boxing is all about. This is the highest level of boxing, especially at these weight classes. We are proud that Golden Boy Promotions has three fighters taking part in this epic event. It speaks to our company’s dedication to getting our fighters the best opportunities in the sport ... Thank you Turki Alalshikh for making boxing great again. Boxing is back, and let's keep it this way and make the big fights happen.”
