Canelo Alvarez vs.
Terence Crawford has been broken down to its simplest form: Power vs. Skills.
Crawford has his fair share of knockouts. During his welterweight run, every fighter who stood before him failed to make it to the final round. However, against Canelo Alvarez, many are convinced that he needs to box and move.
For the entirety of their respective careers, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has campaigned in higher weight classes. With the Mexican star having knocked out full-fledged light heavyweights, he appears to have the advantage in both size and strength.
That narrative, though, irks Brian “Bomac” McIntyre. Although Crawford is stepping up two divisions to face Alvarez for his super middleweight throne, the former Trainer of the Year doesn’t believe his man will have an issue with Alvarez's physicality when they
meet on Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Netflix.
“He ain’t the bigger guy,” McIntyre told The Ring. “He ain’t.”
Power has never been something that’s bothered Crawford. Against Errol Spence Jr., Kell Brook, Israil Madrimov, and others, the Omaha, Nebraska, native adjusted nicely. Alvarez, though, is a different animal.
The 35-year-old hasn’t scored a stoppage win since taking out Caleb Plant in 2021, but his recent opponents, outside of William Scull, have kissed the canvas.
Still, even with that sort of TNT wedged in Alvarez's fists, McIntyre isn’t losing any sleep.
“I don’t give [an expletive] about that power,” McIntyre said. “The power isn't going to be able to sustain him throughout the fight.”
McIntyre has been around a long time, meaning he won’t divulge relevant information about his game plan. But how exactly does he prepare his man for a bigger fighter with knockout power? McIntyre smiled before giving a short and simple answer.
“Timing.”
