Bohachuk’s Promoter Explains Passing On Ennis Fight For Adams Rematch
Tom Loeffler offered the same explanation to fans that he gave to Eddie Hearn, Jaron Ennis’ promoter, when Hearn presented an opportunity for Serhii Bohachuk to face Ennis on Oct. 11.

A long-sought rematch with Brandon Adams won’t just provide Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) with the chance to avenge one of his two professional losses. A second shot at Adams (25-4, 16 KOs) will also provide the Ukrainian junior middleweight contender significant exposure because it’ll be on the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford undercard Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Bohachuk-Adams rematch will be the last of five fights streamed on YouTube before the Netflix portion of the undercard begins. Their 10-round, 156-pound bout was officially announced Tuesday by TKO.

“I know Eddie Hearn mentioned there was a big offer made for Serhii [to fight Ennis], but we were working on this fight, which I told Eddie,” Loeffler, who promotes Bohachuk, told The Ring. “And we feel like this is a more important step for the promotion of his career, to fight the rematch with Brandon Adams on this show.

"And then we can always see what the opportunities are in the future for Serhii. He’s the mandatory challenger in the WBC [rankings]. He’s very well positioned, and we still believe that he’s the top [154-pound fighter] in the world.”

Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs, 1 NC) will instead make his junior middleweight debut against a huge underdog, Uisma Lima, at Wells Fargo Center in Ennis’ hometown of Philadelphia. Hearn noted that Bohachuk was among the opponents who turned down a fight with Ennis before they settled on Angola’s Lima (14-1, 10 KOs).

Ennis has endured harsh criticism for agreeing to fight the unknown Lima in his first fight since he gave up The Ring, IBF and WBA welterweight titles two months ago.

Adams, meanwhile, trailed on all three scorecards when his vicious left hook knocked Bohachuk to the canvas late in the eighth round of their March 2021 bout in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Bohachuk got up, but referee Ramon Pena stopped the scheduled 10-rounder because he couldn’t stand up straight.

Bohachuk tried to secure an immediate rematch with Adams, but it took four years for him to get that chance.

“This is a great, high-profile fight for him,” Loeffler said. “And if everything goes the right way for him, then we’ll build on bigger things coming up in the future. The amount of eyeballs on this, media and not just boxing fans, but mainstream celebrities that’ll be there, and all the people watching it on [Netflix] is huge, bigger than any event that I know of, especially with Netflix’s involvement, the international involvement.

"This is the biggest stage that Serhii could’ve hoped to have been on. It’s an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up.”
