LONDON — Robert Smith, the general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, has confirmed that they have taken legal advice following
Chris Eubank Jr’s scarcely believable press conference rant.
As reported by
The Ring last week, Eubank used part of
Wednesday’s launch press conference for his rematch with Conor Benn to take aim at the Board, who govern professional boxing in the United Kingdom, and Smith in particular.
During the outburst, Eubank suggested that Smith was partly responsible for his failure to make the weight and then accused him of being in "in the back pockets of Matchroom and Eddie Hearn."
“Just another scumbag in this treacherous and underhanded industry we find ourselves in,” he said.
Eubank also questioned what the Board do with the money they receive from fines, such as the £100,000 he paid for
hitting Benn with an egg during a head-to-head before their first fight.
The 36-year-old from Brighton won his initial encounter with Benn, claiming a unanimous decision via three 116-112 scorecards
after a pulsating clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.
Immediately after the fight, an extremely dehydrated Eubank was sent straight to hospital but he alleged that his ambulance was held up for 20 minutes before it was allowed to leave the stadium.
Although he appeared to blame Matchroom directly for that particular issue, Eubank did question why the Board failed to investigate it.
When offered an immediate right of reply by The Ring, Smith was unavailable for comment but he did appear on talkSPORT over the weekend.
He said: “Obviously I can’t say too much about Chris Eubank as we have taken legal advice but it is disappointing that anybody would say that any member of the Board or myself would do anything detrimental to a boxer’s health.
“To say somebody deliberately stopped an ambulance from leaving a venue is quite unbelievable.”
Eubank and Benn are set for a rematch back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on November 15.
