Getting motivated for a good fighter doesn’t exactly do it for Lopez, but a great one? Now we’re talking. One fighter who fits that description, and some, is unified welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis.
Does Teofimo Lopez really want a big fight? Bill Haney has his doubts.
Take a moment and listen closely. You can hear it, can’t you? No matter what part of the globe you reside in, you can hear the faint cries from Lopez screaming for a big fight.
Getting motivated for a good fighter doesn’t exactly do it for Lopez, but a great one? Now we’re talking. One fighter who fits that description, and some, is unified welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis.
With each passing fight, the Philly star continues to look more and more dangerous. But, despite him either coasting to a decision or putting his opponents in the back of an ambulance, Lopez wants a piece of the action.
Bill Haney, father and trainer of Devin Haney, isn’t buying it. Calling out Ennis, the way he sees it, is more of a smokescreen tactic. What Lopez is truly trying to do is avoid someone far more dangerous.
“He’s acting like he’s looking for Boots. Man, knock it off,” Haney said to Tha Boxing Voice. “You know why you looking for Boots? Because you running from Devin Haney.”
Haney probably wouldn’t provide the danger Lopez is looking for, but he is a slick boxer with intelligent feet and flawless timing. Ironically enough, the two were last seen sharing the same card May 2 in New York’s Times Square. Lopez had little trouble grabbing a unanimous decision win over Arnold Barboza, while Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) cruised to a victory against Jose Ramirez.
For years now, a showdown between them has been floating around, but nothing concrete has emerged from those rumor mills. Bill, though, isn’t willing to let those discussions die down. If Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) wants the biggest fight possible, and the most financially rewarding one, he’ll stop shouting Ennis’ name and begin banging on Haney’s door.
“The biggest name for Teofimo Lopez is Devin Haney.”
