Beterbiev Reflects on First Bout With Bivol, Highly Motivated To Retain Titles
The Last Crescendo!

It's one of the very best, top to bottom, boxing cards of all-time and it's headlined by Ring/ undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev facing Dmitry Bivol in their eagerly anticipated rematch.

The fight takes place 121 days since their first meeting, once again at the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. It promises to be quite the spectacle.

The two shared the ring for 36-minutes and at the end, Beterbiev was taken the distance for the first time but his late surge was enough to sway two of the three judges, who sided with him, while the other judge scored it a draw.

Industry insiders and fans were split, even the broadcasts on TNT Sports and DAZN weren't in agreement.

So, the only right and proper thing to do was meet again to attempt to decide who is the premier 175-pound fighter on the planet.

I was fortunate to be in Montreal in early February and was invited to visit Beterbiev at his trainer, Marc Ramsay's gym.

"The return fight will be very interesting," said Ramsay. "Which one will have taken the best information [on] and who will be able to make the right adjustments... I have my own idea on this subject.

"Artur has a great camp at the moment away from injuries and the motivation is at its peak. The whole team is really looking forward to arriving in Saudi Arabia and fight!"

He's what Artur, who was at times guarded but also in a playful mood, had to say during our interview.

Anson Wainwright: What are your thoughts on the Bivol rematch?

Artur Beterbiev: "I am too busy to think about something. I just try to prepare for the fight."

AW: Because one day you'll be a good boxer?

AB: "To be good boxer and prepare to fight."

AW: You have shared a ring with him so know what he brings to the fight?

AB: "It can be different, we'll see - it's very interesting. We try to change something; they try to change something. I think it's more interesting."

AW: It's a quick turnaround after the first fight. Do you think that suits you?

AB: "I prefer to have a little more time but if we don't have choice and we're both in the same position."

AW: What did you learn from having shared a ring with him for 12-rounds. Was he better, stronger, quicker, not as quick etc?

AB: "He's good boxer [Laughs]"

AW: What did you learn?

AB: Yes, I learnt something, but I can't tell you [Laughs.]"

AW: It was worth asking... Was that the biggest challenge you've had in your professional career?

AB: "If you compare how it goes to the decision, if you compare like this, yes. I think in my boxing career, I think there are more power guys and more technical guys, maybe equal, but he's a little bit different."

AW: You're from Chechnya and he's from Kyrgyzstan but both are old Soviet Union countries. How are people split?

AB: "I don't know about him, about me, I am from Chechnyan republic, in Russia, Kyrgyzstan is not in Russia, it's out of Russia but is Soviet Union.

"I have enough followers or fans. I finish college in Moscow, and I finish university in Moscow, Physical Education. It's my home, my country."

AW: If I take you back, how good to you think you were in the first Bivol fight?

AB: "I had like three months before fight, I had surgery on my knee, it's some effect on my performance and preparation. It's surgery, it takes time, it's like needle. There are some complicated things but it's not that bad."

AW: Now you've done 12-rounds, and you've come through and tested the knee to you now feel stronger?

AB: "First time, I got the IBF belt [against Enrico Koelling], I did 12-rounds, only 27 seconds [left.]"

AW: Turki Alalshikh said prior to David Benavidez-David Morrell that he wanted the winner to be ringside for your fight. Do you have an opinion on what and who else you could potentially fight?

AB: "I don't know, I never watch boxing. It's not because I don't like them, or they're not good boxers, there are many guys who have a high performance, but I am not looking for them before I sign contract. If I sign contract, I will start to learn them.

"You can ask me this question after February 22."

AW: You had a birthday a few weeks ago, people focus on that and say you're now 40?

AB: "Why you remember [Laughs]...you need to ask my strength and condition coach and boxing coach, if I can do today like 5-years. I feel, yes."

AW: Obviously, you have this fight with Bivol but what else is there for you to achieve?

AB: "We'll see, in the future, I am open to different things."

AW: Could you go up in weight?

AB: "Maybe. Why not."

AW: If the purse is right?

AB: "For me, I know money is interesting but for me, always it's more titles. I am more focused on titles than money, but money is good too.

"I am more focused like if we talk about boxing skills, it's not money, I like to try to reach my goal. Even today, I didn't reach my goal."

AW: What is your goal?

AB: "To be good boxer one day."

AW: And what do you need to do to be achieve that?

AB: "I don't know, we'll see, I need to feel that, so far I haven't felt that.

"Roy Jones say a good thing when I met him in London. He say, "When you want to be good boxer, you want to prove different boxing skills." He want to learn something." So far I don't feel it."
