The first, and so far only, loss of his career still isn’t sitting well with
Edgar Berlanga.
In September 2024,
Berlanga knew he had a fight on his hands. However, he strolled to the ring in Las Vegas as confident as ever despite being asked to knock off Canelo Alvarez.
The bravado he displayed beforehand, along with the heart he showed despite being outgunned, did little to stop Alvarez. Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) never expected to lose, but the experience he gained was a valuable one. Now that he isn’t green and knows what it’s like in those big moments, he wants another crack at him.
“We gotta run that back,” said Berlanga to a group of reporters recently.
A rematch with Alvarez won’t come easy with the Mexican star having a fairly busy schedule. Saturday night, he’ll attempt to become a two-time undisputed champion when he faces William Scull. From there, he’ll have a megafight to deal to fulfill.
As first reported by The Ring, all systems are a go for a showdown between Alvarez and Terence Crawford in September. Still, even if he were a free man, Berlanga would have some work to do.
It won’t be easy working his way back into the good graces of the public but his recent first-round stoppage win over Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz was a decent start. His level of opposition will take a gigantic leap as he’s scheduled to face Hamzah Sheeraz in July.
One win against an elite fighter won’t quite be enough, but if Berlanga can rack up two? Now we’re talking.
“Right now, I gotta focus on July 12th, whoever we up against,” he said. “They saying Sheeraz so if it’s him, we knock him down. Then I wanna fight [Jaime] Munguia. I’m knocking Munguia the f—- out and then we going on to Canelo.”
