Moses Itauma has already been anointed as the heir apparent to undisputed heavyweight champion
Oleksandr Usyk, but the 20-year-old’s trainer Ben Davison believes the southpaw has everything it takes to not only rule over the division, but the entire sport.
Over the past few years, Usyk,
Naoya Inoue and
Terence Crawford have been embroiled in an unofficial, three-way battle for the
mythical title of the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.Davison sees Itauma on a daily basis and thinks that he could eventually become the first Briton to ever hold claim to the prestigious "title."
"I don't think this country has ever produced a pound-for-pound best boxer in the world. I think we have an opportunity to do that," he told talkSPORT.
"I don't think a heavyweight [has been pound-for-pound best] barring now a bit of talk with Usyk. For a heavyweight — a British heavyweight — to have the potential to be the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world, that's what we've got when it comes to Moses Itauma."
Usyk has been quiet since taking
Daniel Dubois' IBF title in July. The fifth-round knockout victory saw Usyk crowned undisputed heavyweight beltholder for a second time.
Regardless of what happens to his vast array of titles, the 38-year-old Ukrainian will remain the universally recognised champion until he calls time on his outstanding career or somebody beats him. While his exploits have earned him the right to bide time and wait for an attractive challenge to present itself, the sport — and the division — must keep moving.
Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) is already ranked at No.1 (WBO), No.2 (WBA), No.5 (IBF) and 11th (WBC).
It is understood that he will return to action at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena on a
December 13 show to be announced. No opponent has been confirmed, but it is rumoured he will face a top 10 contender, looking to edge ever closer to a title shot.
Davison could easily preach caution, wait for Usyk to depart the scene and then let his man loose on the available contenders and vacant titles. However, so confident he is in Itauma's ability that should the opportunity to fight Usyk present itself, he would be extremely confident about taking the belts inside the ring.
"I strongly do believe that there's all this talk about, 'This is the right fight for Usyk,' or, 'He should fight this person,'” he said.
"There is nobody else with a better chance of beating Oleksandr right now than Moses Itauma. That's my true honest feelings."
