Barboza Detests Teofimo Lopez: I Just Think He Acts Like A Female; He’s A Clown To Me, Man
Arnold Barboza Jr. mostly laughed off Teomfio Lopez’s performative attempts at promoting their grudge match May 2 in Times Square, live on DAZN PPV.
Barboza obviously took exception to Lopez taking a swipe at him on stage during a press conference last month in Los Angeles. Other than that, though, he dismissed The Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion as “a clown” who craves attention at every turn.
Lopez considers Barboza boring, someone incapable of helping hype up a 12-round fight that will take place in one of the world’s most iconic spaces. They traded insults during a roundtable discussion in Times Square hosted by DAZN’s Todd Grisham, which debuted recently on .
The Brooklyn-born Lopez wore overalls, without a shirt, and a straw hat as he sat with Barboza and the four other primary participants – Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, Jose Ramirez and Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
“I just think he acts like a female, man,” Barboza said. “You know, he wants all the attention all the time. So, he is who he is, man. You know what I mean? And he’s a clown to me, man. He’s a clown to me, man. He’s gonna get smacked around, so it’s funny to me.”
Lopez laughed off Barboza’s comments.
“I need feminine energy, man,” Lopez replied. “I’m around a lotta women, bro. I love the ladies, man.”
The 27-year-old Lopez realizes, of course, that this fight is no laughing matter. The 33-year-old Barboza beat British southpaw Jack Catterall by split decision in his last fight, a 12-rounder February 15 at Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England, near Catterall’s hometown of Chorley.
The El Monte, California native’s impressive victory over Catterall (30-2, 13 KOs) won him the then-vacant WBO interim junior welterweight title. Barboza is also ranked No. 3 among The Ring’s junior welterweight contenders, behind only Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) and IBF champ Richardson Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs).
Las Vegas’ Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) is nonetheless listed as slightly more than a 2-1 favorite by DraftKings to beat Barboza (32-0, 11 KOs) in the second of four fights on The Ring’s “FATAL FURY: The City of the Wolves” card in Manhattan. The price point for this Ring pay-per-view event headlined by Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC), of Victorville, California, and Romero (16-2, 13 KOs), of North Las Vegas, Nevada, is $59.99.
This four-fight card can be bundled as well with the Riyadh Season pay-per-view show set for the following night for a combined price of $89.99.
Mexican legend Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and unbeaten Cuban William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) are scheduled to box for Alvarez’s Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight crowns and Scull’s IBF belt in the 12-round main event May 3 at ANB Arena in Riyadh. The Alvarez-Scull show is also available separately for $59.99.
