M&S BANK ARENA, LIVERPOOL -- It was double delight for the Birchall brothers on a memorable debut night, as William and Leighton both produced second-round stoppage victories to kick off their career in the paid ranks on a five-fight undercard.
That came before TNT Sports' televised portion of the Queensberry bill topped by Nick Ball's world featherweight title defence against TJ Doheny, their last on the platform before heading to DAZN as part of a multi-year deal at the start of April.
Clarke kicks off TV portion
He started well, to head-and-body, though Liverpool middleweight Stephen Clarke (6-0, 1 KO) didn't accelerate down the stretch as fans ringside implored him to, in what fizzled out into another points win against 26-fight pro Dmitri Protkunas.
A faux knockdown at the end of the fifth should've prompted an increase in activity, though he continued to overthink his entries and that didn't stop there either. Clarke couldn't miss with his one-two combinations in the final round, though the Estonian knew this was going the distance as they exchanged pleasantries shortly afterwards.
Birchall boys rejoice
Leighton lashed body shots galore as though they were going out of business with frenzied attacks to get Hungarian visitor Laszlo Bernath (1-2, 1 KO) out of their scheduled four-round contest earlier than expected.
Seeing the 24-year-old crumble to the canvas twice, a round apiece, was enough for referee John Latham to ultimately wave it off after witnessing him absorb another unanswered flurry against the ropes.
"My brothers are my life and my best friends, I was supposed to box on the Dereck Chisora undercard but it got postponed, we just kept working. If you thought you saw something special, well, just wait until I'm at title level. I'll keep getting better, just gonna get to the top and I mean that," he told Dev Sahni ringside post-fight.
Earlier on in the evening, oldest brother William used the opening stanza to gauge the distance before jumping on Engel Gomez (8-44-3, 4 KOs) with speedy venom after landing a stinging right hand which signalled the beginning of the end.
The third brother, 20-year-old Nelson (7-0, 4 KOs), admitted nerves were jangling at times knowing it was out of his control seeing his sublings up close but roles will be reversed soon: his maiden appearance of 2025 comes in Manchester on April 5.
Lawton lethal, Bourne anything but on contrasting debuts
Lewis Lawton's famous father Scott
told local media during the week that his son could punch, but no-one expected such a startling debut appearance from the junior-middleweight here.
Barely a minute into his scheduled four-rounder against Estonia's Artjom Spatar (4-13-1, 1 KO), the 20-year-old landed a two-punch combination in centre ring and within a few seconds, Spatar's delayed reaction was one of pure agony as he doubled over on the mat, briefly got up and back down again.
A left hook to the body did the trick and Stoke's latest product will surely be angling for a quick turnaround, sustaining momentum from a fight week he won't forget.
Joe Bourne endured a rough evening's work against six-fight pro Cristian Uwaka (1-5-1, 1 KO) over four rounds, having stepped in on short-notice after 5-0 heavyweight pro Boma Brown withdrew earlier this week.
The former rugby player and powerlifter, 27, wasn't allowed much separation to let his hands go against a man 60 pounds lighter but importantly more experienced and with better conditioning to boot.
Uwaka's subtle attacks caught the pro debutant and kept him honest, as they drew 38-38 in the show opener.
Later on, another of the Everton Red Triangle clan in Lucas Biswana (2-0) won on his second pro appearance but couldn't find the stoppage he craved after flooring Ezequiel Gregores (3-21) midway through their four-rounder at welterweight.
