It’s been a while since Badou Jack was last seen in the ring, nearly two years to be exact. But just because he’s been both out of sight and out of mind, it doesn’t mean he’s planning his exit from the sport.
Life for Jack (28-3-3, 17 KOs) has been sweet. In 2023, he successfully became a three-division champion after stopping Ilunga Makabu. From the outside looking in, Jack has seemingly done enough. His trophy case is littered with world titles and at the age of 41, he doesn’t have much to prove. With that said, walking away from the game would feel premature.
The cruiserweight division hasn’t always been viewed in a flattering light but nowadays, it’s one of the hottest weight classes around. Jack isn’t the only big name holding a major strap. Jai Opetaia owns both The Ring and IBF trinkets, while Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is clutching both the WBO and WBA titles.
Jack wants to strip his fellow champions of their status but before he can do that, he’ll have to take care of business against mandatory challenger, Ryan Rozicki.
At times, fighters have loopholes available to them. However, it’s unlikely that Jack will find a way around Rozicki. The 30-year-old has remained in the mandatory position for nearly two years and is refusing to take a step back.
It’s unclear when the two will get it on, but Jack isn't eschewing him. But while he’s focused on defending his crown, he has one eye on the rest of the division’s champions. In terms of who he would like to face once Rozicki is no longer in the picture, that doesn’t quite matter to him. As long as he’ll be given the opportunity to aggregate every cruiserweight title, he’ll be satisfied.
“Not really,” said Jack to Boxing News when asked who he would like to fight next. “I think they're both similar. Ramirez got better experience, Opetaia might be a little younger and fresher. It doesn't matter. I heard they might fight next. I’ll fight the winner.”
