The final faceoff between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol was about as unremarkable Friday afternoon as all of their other promotional meetings leading up to their immediate rematch.
Most important, of course, was that Beterbiev and Bivol came in at or below the light heavyweight limit for their second 12-round, 175-pound title fight Saturday night at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Beterbiev, 40, stepped on the British Boxing Board of Control’s scale at exactly 175 pounds, almost a full pound more than the 34-year-old Bivol, who officially weighed 174.1.
Their rematch will headline an eight-fight pay-per-view card, “The Last Crescendo,” supported by Riyadh Season through Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
Beterbiev beat Bivol by majority decision October 12 at nearby Kingdom Arena to become boxing’s first undisputed light heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.
Bivol boxed off his back foot for much of their bout, but he worked well off his jab, occasionally landed in combination when he stood his ground and landed five more punches overall than Beterbiev according to CompuBox’s unofficial statistics. Beterbiev hit Bivol with the flusher punches consistently, however, and employed an aggressive approach often favored by judges.
Poland’s Pawel Kardyni (116-112) and American Glenn Feldman (115-113) scored their competitive contest for the Russian-born, Quebec-based Beterbiev. Spain’s Manuel Oliver Palomo scored Beterbiev-Bivol a draw, 114-114.
Beterbiev (21-0, 20 KOs) went the distance for the first time in his 11-year professional career. He also retained his IBF, WBC, WBO and IBO belts and won the WBA belt from Bivol by winning their long-awaited showdown four months ago.
Bivol, a longtime Russia resident who was a slight betting favorite, lost for the first time in 10 years as a pro (23-1, 12 KOs). Beterbiev is now a slight betting favorite entering their second contest, -130/+105 according to DraftKings.
