Armando Resendiz Ready To Pull Off Upset, Disrupt Caleb Plant’s Plan To Fight Jermall Charlo
Armando Resendiz and his wife, Yareli, intend to start a family soon.

Mindful of the financial responsibility having a child will bring to their world, Resendiz realizes that upsetting Caleb Plant on Saturday night would be a huge help to the young couple. The 26-year-old Mexican’s motivation also comes from knowing he can ruin Premier Boxing Champions’ plan to match Plant against rival Jermall Charlo next if the two former champions win what are viewed as tune-up bouts at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

Houston’s Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) will meet Thomas LaManna (38-5-1, 19 KOs), of Millville, New Jersey, in a 10-round co-feature before Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) opposes Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) in a 12-round main event Amazon’s Prime Video will stream to its subscribers. Undercard coverage is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET (1 a.m. GMT).

DraftKings lists Plant and Charlo as 20-1 and 12-1 favorites.

“It definitely motivates me a lot,” Resendiz told The Ring. “At the same time, it takes a lot of pressure off me. Being the 'B' side, I have nothing to lose. But at the same time, I know what I can do and what I can give inside the ring. So, I’m pumped up because I know I can pull off the upset and I can disrupt things.”

Resendiz was a well-regarded prospect prior to his upset defeat to Marcos Hernandez, who was 14-4-2 when he unanimously outpointed him in their 10-round bout in September 2021 at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Resendiz knocked out former IBF/WBA 154-pound champion Jarrett Hurd, who was 24-2 at the time, two fights later, yet he couldn’t capitalize on the momentum he built by stopping him on a cut through his lip March 2023 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

In Resendiz’s next bout, Elijah Garcia (then 15-0) stopped him during the eighth round of a fan-friendly slugfest on the Canelo Alvarez-Jermell Charlo undercard in September 2023 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Resendiz defeated Fernando Paliza (then 5-2) by fifth-round technical knockout in his only bout since Garcia beat him.

Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champ from Ashland City, Tennessee, remains one of the top competitors in the 168-pound division. Resendiz considers the 32-year-old Plant, ranked No. 4 among The Ring’s 168-pound contenders, the most formidable opponent of his career.

“I know that he’s a really good fighter, an elite fighter, and that’s why I’m excited to go up against him,” Resendiz said. “I wanna go up against the best.”

Though still in the heart of his physical prime, Resendiz recognizes that he must make the most of this chance if he is to ever reach his potential.

“I know that it will open up a lot of doors for me in my career,” Resendiz said, “where it will open up a whole new world and the biggest and best opportunities will be within my reach. And that’s priceless. In my life, it will allow me to provide for my wife, for my future kids, and give me the financial freedom that will allow me and my family to be in a great position. So, there’s a lot at stake in this fight, but I’m excited.”
