ANTHONY YARDE has lifted the lid on his contractual dispute with Frank Warren and the ‘beautiful reunion’ that followed.
It is now 10 years since Warren signed Yarde as a raw novice with just 12 amateur bouts. He has since guided the ‘Beast from the East’ to two world title shots over the course of his 29-fight pro career to date.
However, their long-term relationship seemed to have fallen apart last year when Yarde announced he had become a free agent. Then, in October, he boxed for the first time ever away from the Queensberry banner when he laboured to a 10-round win over little-known Ralfs Vilcans.
But Warren was adamant Yarde was still under contract and it was widely reported that the 33-year-old and Queensberry Promotions were embroiled in a legal dispute regarding the disagreement.
Then, in February this year, Yarde was a guest at the Queensberry show topped by Dereck Chisora’s victory over Otto Wallin, where the pair were reunited. “He’s like a father figure to me,” Yarde said that night. “We will always be on good terms.”
Now Yarde will box again under the Queensberry banner, when he takes on Lyndon Arthur on April 26 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of the undercard for Ring Magazine’s Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves event.
And the 26-3 (24) East Londoner told The Ring that it was only ever a misunderstanding between him and Warren.
“Do you know what? There's never been a problem with me and Frank,” Yarde said. “It's just that when there's business there’s business. So Frank Warren's team was doing their thing and my people that negotiate for me were doing their thing.
“When it comes to the paperwork, I'm not a lawyer or a professional negotiator, I fight. I was told this was your last fight in the contract. So I went into that fight thinking ‘yeah, my final fight in the contract’. That was the last fight in the contract but Frank thought it wasn't.
“Obviously, I'm not going to get into the particulars but it was a back and forth like ‘you said this, you said this… I said this, you said this’. And then again, that all fizzled out. It got sorted.
“I’m just glad we got everything sorted because we have a beautiful relationship. And even when I first saw Frank after it all happened we hugged each other. And Frank was even closing his eyes like ‘ah, my son. It's done!’
“I've got a soft spot for Frank. Frank's got a soft spot for me. I love the team and his family. I just love his family. You know when you've been on a journey with somebody it's beautiful.
“But again on the business side, Frank's going to always make sure that his business is in order. And I want to make sure that when I retire boxing, I'm comfortable. And that's it.”
Yarde also revealed how he and Warren were both left stunned by the news that he would be facing Arthur for a third time.
“I was at the Ring Awards in January,” he said. “His Excellency Turki Al-Alshikh just told me there and then ‘you’re fighting in April’. So I was just like ‘yeah, ok!’
“Frank Warren was there too and I was still in negotiations with him at the time. And when Turki said that, we all looked at each other like, ok this is news to everyone.
“Frank said: ‘I'm just hearing about this at the same time as you’. It didn’t take long for me to say yes. Tottenham is going to be amazing.”
